My question is, do you guys stop counting calories burned the second that your workout ends or do you wait a few minutes until your heart rate goes back down. I was just wondering b/c those few minutes can acount for about 50 calories or so.

It might be cheating but ....I don't stop the watch until a few minutes after my workout - I wait until my HR is back down about half way to capture those additional calories!
there I confessed and it feels good!! :bigsmile:0 -
well I do it too, but if your heart rate is still elevated then you are still burning calories.0
-
I start it right as Jazzercise begins, and don't stop it until I'm loaded back up in my car.
May be "cheating" but that's how I do it.0 -
glad to know that I'm not the only one who does this.  :laugh:0

Do you guys ever wear it for the whole day, workout and all, to figure what you burn in 24 hours? Just curious. I thought I might do this, and then try and eat 500 less than that to lose 1 lb per week. I thought that woudl be the most accurate way to do it.
Thoughts??? :flowerforyou:0 -

Yes! definitely do this! this is a great test to see your personal KCals burned...I used to do and should do it again as my fitness level has probably changed....0 -
I dont consider it cheating.
If you take your normal calories for the day and divide by 24, you would have a somewhat close approximation of calories per hour (fudge it a little higher because it will be a little low (you really would be using more calories during your waking hours depending on your activity).
If I run for 30 minutes and walk / cool down / sit for another 30, it might say I burnt 820 calories. I am suppose to burn around 90 to 120 calories per hour. So I would subtract around 120 calories off and record 700 calories used as exercise calories for the event.
Today was running 3 miles in 22:30 and then walking until my heart rate went down to 125. Then I would sprint until the alarm went off (185) and walk until it was 130. Then I would sprint again to the alarm. I finally walked until it was 135, did one last sprint, and figured my heart had enough abuse for the day! Shrew! ~smiling~0 -
Could you guys explain this for me??? :ohwell:
For example, tonight I went for a 20 minute run, and burned 202 calories. Then, it took about 2 minutes for my heart rate to go down, during which time I burned another 20 calories. Is this what you mean??? Whether or not to count these calories?
Man - you guys are precise!!!! I usually just count the 200 I burned during the run!0 -
I stop it as soon as I finish. Never thought to do it any other way.0

Its all fuzzy math for me... As long as I keep losing (or maintain) I am happy!
~laughing~
If you get your heart rate elevated (say 150 or more) it only takes you 2 minutes to get back down to under 100? WOW? When I got mine up to 190, it literally took me about 15 minutes to get back under 100 and about 30 minutes to get back to my resting average of 55 to 60.
I would keep the heart rate going until you get below 110 to 120. Your body is still expending WAY more energy (cooling off, etc) than you would be otherwise.
I find that if I include my cooldown, it matches much closer to the MFP formulas.0 -

Thanks Tim - I'm with you - as long as it's a workout and the lbs are coming off, I'm happy!!!
Ohhhhhh - I got what you guys are saying!!! I "cool down" at the end of my run for a few minutes with a walk (which I include in my 20 minutes of workout time) - this cool down lowers my heart rate, and I do count that in my calories, of course! I guess that it what you guys mean. I thought you guys were saying you kept burning crazy amount of calories in the minutes after the exercise - taking off shoes, brushing teeth, getting in shower...
Oh definitely a few minutes to bring the heart rate down after a run, but not too long anymore! Good thing and bad thing - it means we have to work harder now to get that same calorie burn. :grumble:0 -

You got it girl!! Those extra 20 calories are very valuable!! and when it is more like 80 calories - well hot damn that is almost enought for an ice cream sandwich for dessert!!0 -
My rule is:
shoes on to leave for the gym (I walk there and back). . .turn the monitor on
shoes off (as soon as I get home) monitor off.
(and, I have pondered leaving those shoes on for a few more hours, but I haven't done it.)

i do the same thing! i wait til my heart rate goes back down, and usually i end up burning another hundred calories or so, so yay!0
-
I stop my watch when my heart rate gets back to around 100. When I ride or run, I continue to "walk it out" until it gets close to 100. I do laps up and down the driveway or around the house to cool down. I then take the calorie burned, and subtract one for each minute I worked out for BMR. If I burned 500 calories in 30 minutes, I log it down correctly to keep track of my burning in the long run. However I make note to use it as 470 calories.0

I do my workout and cooldown and take a look at my heartrate. Once its close to normal I stop the monitor. I figure that even if I'm not at my target rate if my HR is still 100 or 120 then I'm still burning calories!!0
