You can run w/o an iPod! It is liberating. Plus you can experience more of the race atmosphere w/o it.
btw, I am signed up for a 10 mile race in May too. But probably a different one since I live in the midwest.
good luck!0 -
I would run. I usually do races w/o music. It's so fun and energizing to hear people cheering. The time goes by really fast too.0

You may actually find that running outside without your ipod isn't as bad as it seems! I actually never run with music. I'd consider doing so at the gym, but never outside. I take the time to focus on my breathing, my steps, how running "feels", as well as noticing things in the environment around me. It sounds cheesy, but sometimes it really is important to disconnect from electronics and really allow yourself to just be.0

Practice running with out the iPod. Listen to the birds, say hi to others out, listen to what your body is saying. ts amazing what happens when you focus on your body rather than music... i go faster and longer with out it and the time actually passes by faster.
Good luck!0 -
When's your race? I'd start training without your iPod now. I'm a runner and I find that it can actually be really awesome to run without the music distraction, I prefer it now... it really lets you focus on what's going on around you and how you're racing. Trust me, I've run 4 marathons, your brain WILL find stuff to think about to get you through. Go for it and tell yourself it'll be great! You might just be surprised!0

I rarely run with an iPod unless I'm doing training podcasts, and I never run a race with one. I love the race atmosphere. It's fun, do the race, you might be surprised.0

You don't need it. I found out that I can't use one during my tri so I've been training without one. It's amazing how much you can just enjoy the sounds around you. Plus, it helps me focus on my breathing and pace.0 -
bring your ipod and just put one bud in your ear....put the wire in your shirt and do your awesomest on your race....0

LOL! Sneaky, I like it! But I think I might then be too paranoid to actually enjoy myself (if one can call running 10 miles primarily uphill enjoyable). But I will keep that in mind if I feel especially rebellious or see other people using theirs * if they're doing it, I can too!!! * :devil:0 -
RUN!!! You may miss it at first but just take in the surroundings and enjoy!!!0

One of my fastest times was during a 5K w/o ipods. I paid more attention to the pace of the pack. But, that's the only time I've ever ran w/o mine.0

Runner's World suggested alternating between music and no music to get a sense of running both ways. I used to go with the shuffle on every run, but now I really do like going without too. I would give it a try for a few runs and see how it goes. It might not be as bad as you think. I would go crazy without it on a treadmill, but outside, I don't think I need it anymore.
Good Luck!!!

Don't be silly of course you can run without your iPod.
That way you can actually take in the atmosphere of the race, people cheering etc.
Start training without it. That way you can start paying attention to your breathing etc and you might actually find that it improves your running.0 -
I don't run, but I power walk, and I find that I need the ipod on the treadmill to keep my pace going, but the same music actually slows me down when I'm power walking outside. Try without, and you might just surprise yourself!0
