Hi! I started P90X yesterday. I've done it in the past and loved it! I am totally stoked to see some change! I have quite a bit of weight to lose still. Here are my questions for those of you who have done it or are doing it now.

Do you always do his 90 min yoga?? I don't know that I can find 90 min to do it uninterrupted with 3 little kids around. I was thinking about subbing it with Jillian Micheals yoga at least for the first round. Is that ok??

And I don't like his eating program. So I just want to keep eating how I am. I eat pretty clean and healthy.

Should I see good results if I make those changes?

Anyone who has finished, what were your results like?

  • I am on day 31 and down 12 inches...I just stick with what MFP has set for me and I do try to get through the yoga but you have to remember what tony says "do YOUR best and forget the rest :)"

I'm doing it now, on the first week of phase 2.

My personal opinion is that the Yoga X probably should be done. Have I had to cut it short a few times...yeah unfortunately, but I try to get up earlier than normal to fit it in. If you can find time to do the normal 60min each day + the 15min Ab Ripper X, then the Yoga shouldn't be too big of a deal (though I don't really like it either, it's hard to get motivated for Yoga day LOL). I sweat like crazy when doing it so I know it's a workout for sure, and it ties into the rest of the program to help with balance, supporting muscle groups and flexibility.

As far as the eating...I am not doing the plan, just trying to make good choices. I have looked at the plan and it is sound and the different levels make sense for what you are doing. Will you get the dramatic results that most get if you don't do the diet? No, most likely not, but you will notice changes I'm sure.

Ok. Maybe I will just do as much of it as I can and not feel discouraged if I don't get through it all. I am a little worried about even getting through an hour a day without interruptions. I figured I would do ab ripper later in the day if I have to break them up. I am already getting up at 4:30am and I work some nights so getting up earlier would be hard.

I did the eating plan a couple of years ago and lost a ton of weight in the first month. But it was hard to stick to and now I am breast feeding so I don't know that it is ideal.

Ditch the Yoga for Stretch X or something else. As long as you eat enough calories to sustain the workouts and eat relatively clean you'll be fine. keep in mind that it's not a weight loss program so they don't introduce a specific calorie deficit in the nutrition. You should calculate your calorie need to maintain your current weight and subtract 500.

I did it at about a 200 calorie deficit and dropped 6 pounds. I was already muscular so of course I did not add muscle which would have had added benefit.

Thanks! I know it's not made for weight loss program but when I did it before, I lost a lot of weight. So ya, I need to be careful about the calories. Is the formula for figuring that out in his book? I need to go find that and make sure I'm eating the right amount. Right now I am just eating mfp's recommendations plus some for breast feeding but I don't eat many of my workout calories.

I have seven kids, so I know how hard it is to fit in "yoga day"! On days that I had to, I would only do the first half. Or I would do the whole thing, skipping parts I really, really hate (Warrior Three to Standing splits to twisting moon or whatever... OMG do I hate that part!). Or I would substitute another yoga vid like Tony's Fountain of Youth.

I also didn't follow the nutrition guide... it is too impractical for mom to prepare separate meals for herself, and those meals were too complicated/fancy/expensive for the whole family. I just tried to stay within the ranges from MFP..

    Best wishes, HTH!
  • Yoga is an awesome workout. I actually used to do Yoga and became a certified instructor and was in fabulous shape. I don't know why people want to skip it. It's like saying, "Tony Horton is Great...but he sure is an idiot to include Yoga!" I find it ridiculous that so many people down this form of exercise. Have you ever seen some serious Yoga people? They are EXTREMELY buff and in awesome shape. You may not have the full 90 minutes to do Yoga, but there's no reason to skip the whole thing. Substituting Stretch for Yoga will not get you the same results. Yoga is NOT just stretching, and the two are not equal (and I normally don't disagree with that pyro guy who said that, but this time, I say PTTT! to him, haha!) :flowerforyou:

Oh, and I'm on my rest day today. Started this week, and I lost 1 inch off my waist, and 1 inch off each thigh (I wasn't expecting that already!). I follow a clean eating plan. The plan included in P90X (and Insanity) are stupidly written and unclear (at least to me). Clean Eating is how I lost 100 pounds 12 years ago, and that's how I try to always eat.

The book gives you maintenance and then throws you in one of three brackets. Frankly, you are better off using the MFP calculator. Use number of P90X workouts per week for 600 calories each.

    The P90X calc is Weight * 12 + 600

    So for 150lb person
    150 * 12 + 600 = 2400 then it throws you in a bracket.

. I'd use a HRM and see what you really burn per workout. Their calc is broad and is why results are all over the map for people.

Oh, I'm not downing his yoga at all. It's great and intense! It's just soooo looonnnngggg!!!! haha! I get discouraged when I get interrupted and can't finish my workouts but I think I am going to plan on starting his yoga on yoga days but not get discouraged if I have to quit in the middle of it. I am getting up at 4:30 to start working out and my baby usually wakes up in the middle or near the end of regular workouts. It's frustrating.

    Amazing results!!!! Great job!!

Thank you!!! And I am using a hrm. I always wonder how accurate it is. Today I did cardio x and it said I burned 577 calories. I guess that sounds like it would be about right.

Seriously! I followed the nutrition guide when I did it a couple years ago and it was so expensive!!! And I buy super healthy anyways. I don't know how you find the time with 7 kids! That has to be a challenge! You go girl!

  • I would not ditch the yoga or substiture it for cardio etc. If you must just do the first 45 mins of yoga X. Or you can get one of Tony Horton's One-on-One's there are 3 other yoga videos, Yoga MC2 about an hour, Fountain of Youth about 45 minutes and, Hummingbird or Patience Yoga around 45 minutes. Ive done them all including Yoga X. Tony said if he could only do one workout for ever it would be yoga. So he thinks it's pretty important. I did Yoga X for about 6 months almost 2 full rounds of the X, then I got the Fountain of Youth disc and did that, now my favorite is Yoga MC2. And I hated yoga in the beginning having never done it. But I kept doing it and eventually liked it, it's a nice break from the thrashing you usually give yourself during some of those workouts.

As far as the diet goes, I stuck with the diet plan, it changes every month. Heavy protein and low carbs and fruit at first and then in the end heavy on carbs and fruit, lown on protein. The first time I did P90X I lost 25 pounds and 4 inches off my waist. My weight has been within 5 lbs of that for over 2 years now. I've done the X a few more times, P90X+, a hybrid of P90X called Primal Efforts, and Insanity. I love their programs and theyve given me great results. I don't know what kind of results you'll get not following their diet because I always did, so good luck!

I'd like to do the diet at some point later this year, but I think that'll take getting the wife on board as well. She has some catch up to do to get to the X stage, but I'm confident that if I can get her motivated she can do it.
