Help! Alternative exercises for someone with a Piriformis In

I'm looking for some good alternative exercises to do that will not aggravate a piriformis injury. I am currently in the middle of my training for the Boston Marathon when I have suddenly developed the "butt pain" that travels down my leg to my knee. I've been stretching, massaging, icing, resting, but I do need to continue to exercise. I am hoping to "rest" as is not running, for a while and then get back at it.
Anyone out there that can help with some good suggestions?
Would riding or doing the elliptical work, or would they too aggravate the piriformis?

I had a injury like that. Have you tried getting on the floor and putting a tennis ball where the muscle is hurting, and rolling yourself back and forward on the ball in small movements for about 5 minutes. It will be a little uncomfortable/hurt, but if you do that 2x a day for about 2-3weeks you will find that your piriformis muscle will start to ease up, and less aggravating. Mine totally healed itself, but I did refrain from doing any exercise that might reaggrevate it for at least 3 months. All that other stuff you mentioned, did nothing for the pain. The tennis ball will get down deep into the muscle to take the soreness away. Please keep me informed as to how you are doing.
I pulled mine playing paddle ball. Also, take MINERAL TABLETS... that also helps. I am 61/2 years back to being 100%.0 -
Saw the chiro this morning and that is exactly what she said to do. She did say no stretching at this point as my muscle is completely fatigued and I need to strengthen first. Massage, heat, and strength execise.
What is a mineral tablet? What is that you take?0 -
Regular "Vitamin Shoppe Brand" called Mineral Tablets. Hope all is well with you and you are on your way to healing.
