I just started doing a pilates work-out on the days that I don't do c25k. I was wondering if anyone else is practicing pilates? What do you think of it? Is it a good enough workout or should I be doing something that is more intense?

I love Pilates; great for strengthening your core and building long, lean muscles.

Pilates is great for strengthening and elongating muscles, but it probably does burn a huge amount of calories. You could add some cardio in if you feel you need to, or if your getting your cardio fix from c25k, then just stick with it.

I do Pilates, but not for the calorie burn, b/c it doesn't burn a whole lot. But what it does, is give you great core strength and toning. Plus, the muscles that you build from doing Pilates, will burn off more calories during the day, than the fat that used to be there. I've noticed my abs getting much more pronounced since I've started Pilates. If you're looking just for a good calorie burn, you'll need some intense cardio.

I love pilates, I take 2 classes a week. It does not burn too many calories, compare with cardio exercises, but it is a great core workout.

It will improve your posture, increase your flexibility and your deep breathing (something that most people don't do or practice). Because it does not make you overly tired, it will allow you to still go to workout at the gym or do other cardiovascular exercises.

I assure you that many fit people can't do many of the pilates (or yoga for that matter), exercises since they require concentration, flexibility, and isolation of body parts. I love the results and I hope that you do too. Make sure that you take classes from a certified instructor that follows Joseph Pilates teachings.

I am doing pilates....I have the Winsor Pilates set with the sculpting circle, but I do it in conjunction with cardio on off days. For me, personally, pilates wouldn't be enough to help me lose the weight I want to lose. But it does a fantastic job in my abs, core, arms, etc. Stick with it and in a matter of weeks you will see/feel a difference in your abs. I still have a lot of weight to lose, but I can tell there's some muscles in there somewhere now :-)
  • I am a big fan of the benefits offered through Pilates. I usually use the Core Fusion work outs and sometimes the Winsor Pilates. I find that the core fusion work outs are more intense than most other Pilates I have tried because they are full body strengthening exercises. I just watch them on Hulu--Free, which is also good. I wouldn't get caught up buying any Pilates videos, it can get expensive and there is a lot of great work outs on Hulu.

The best part about Pilates is that you see a difference in your body within the first week. It lengthens and reshapes your body if you are really pushing yourself and also doing the exercises correctly. I honestly feel taller after i work out.

Just an FYI: with the core fusion work outs it may take a couple days to be able to do all of the exercies (It did for me-especailly the leg exercises)-but t is very rewarding when you can complete the 55 minute work out.

Good for you for doing them!

I do pilates, but 30 minutes worth only burn about 100 calories so definitely worth the toning but not very effective with burning extra calories. I always add 30 minutes of cardio to my pilates workout.
  • I've done Pilates DVDs a couple times a week for the past couple months. People are right when they say it's great for building core strength. It's turned me into the sit up queen! I would also suggest supplementing it with a cardio workout. It doesn't burn many calories on its own, but it makes me feel so strong.
