I just purchased some frozen tilapia and was wondering how long to cook it. I see a lot of posts about 10-15 minutes, but I was not sure if that was for frozen or not. I am new to cooking fish, so any input or suggestions would be wonderful :o)

I thaw mine completely, add spices, a little butter (or not) and cook at 350 for 15-20 minutes or so. Delish. One of my favorite dinners.
  • I just wing it. I cook it from frozen in a frying pan on medium heat with olive oil and Mrs Dash table blend/McCormick roasted garlic..it's done when it flakes...and has a nice golden color. Around 10 minutes seems about right.

It's best to thaw it out first. Good rule of thumb is to cook it until it is white, not opaque anymore. If you stick a fork in the middle and twist, it should separate. Previously frozen fish is pretty safe though as far as slightly under cooking.
  • i make sure it's completey thaw first. then i add lemon, pepper, and some garlic powder. 350 degrees for 20-25 mins. delicious and very low cal! :D
  • 10-15 minutes is pretty average. I get the ones that are frozen individually in plastic from Sam's. They take about 15 minutes from frozen - just put the bag into a pot of fully boiling water.

I loooove using the tinfoil tents to steam cook my fish. preheat to 425 then put the fish filet & a vinegarette or margarine or any other marinade of choice, you only need about 2 tbs, and I also like to cut up some veggies, onions, squash or something and put it in there too, cook it for 15-20 minutes and it's amazing!

a tinfoil tent is simple too just tear off a piece about 3 times the size of what you are cooking, put the fish & what not in the middle, take the right and left sides to the center and fold them down together like you might the top of a lunch bag and then roll the ends in.....this also makes for really easy clean up on the pan!

I like to cook fish in the oven wrapped in foil, sometimes a spritz of Pam, sometimes olive oil, and lots of herbs. Dill is very good on fish. Garlic too.
When you start smelling it and it smells good, its usually ready..lol!

it is best to thaw it in a cold water bath. never put food in hot water to thaw, it will poach it and start cooking and that will sometimes cross over into a hazard level of contamination and harmful then to eat.

cooking it depends on what you like. I tend to always grill fish , so my house doesnt smell up with fish!
putting it in a tinfoil pouch, season with herbs and lemon juice or ol bay spice. and cook the pouch on the grill for 5-7 mins. until the fish starts to flake

We cook ours frozen. Take three or four fillets and rub them down with a little bit of olive oil, then sprinkle with some lemon pepper, paprika, dash of garlic powder, and dill weed. Wrap the fillets into a air tight foil pack and then either bake on 375 for 20 minutes, or throw the foil pack on your grill on high for about 20 minutes. (grill time may vary depending on how HOT your grill runs on high).

When done we usually hit them with butter spray and server with broccoli.

i love tilapia. it's one of my favorite things to have for dinner.

i thaw it completely. then add curry powder, paprika and pepper.
then cook it in a frying pan w/ cooking spray for about 5-6 minutes per side on a medium high heat :)

    fan-freakin-tastic :)

are you poaching your fish to eat??
if your using this to thaw it I highly suggest not doing this but putting it in a cold water bath. Thawing frozen raw meats in hot water starts the cooking process and crosses over into the contamination level of the product. I know hot water sounds like its ok but its not. Im not trying to sound rude but Im state certified in food production ( like a health inspector in a restaurant) and Im a personal Chef and have learned many things about the way we handle raw meats. I should would not want anyone to get sick
