is toning enough "weight training"? (turbo fire specific)

Tomorrow, I start adding in more "sculpt" and "tone" DVDs to my current Turbo Fire cardio schedule. Will that be enough "weight training" for now to incorporate into my cardio? Its my 4th week of working out.

  • Depends on your own physical preferences.

If you want a more masculine Jillian Michaels look, eventually you will want to do some descent lifting, but if you prefer more of a Victorias Secret model look, simple light toning mixed in with your cardio is all you'll need.

Hm - very interesting way to put things. I think I want something in between - not quite Jillian, but a little more defined than Victoria. ;) I'll stick with the toning and see how things progress.

Don't be afraid to use a heavier resistance band in the Sculpt and Tone workouts with Turbo Fire. I find the orange band that came with the program to be a bit too 'light' so I use a maroon one that just about kills me, but gets great results.
  • Resistance training is crucial to any weight loss exercise regimen. It has been repeatedly documented that when an exercise program consisting of both aerobic activity and resistance training is combined with an appropriate diet, the subjects lose more weight than those merely performing aerobic activity alone. Resistance training preserves muscle mass and encourages strong bones. Something all women should be interested in because of their risk of osteoporosis. Too often, aerobic only exercisers lose weight at the expense of muscle mass. Resistance bands are a great way to start adding some, well, resistance to your training routine. Once you become comfortable with that, you may want to try some other forms of training offering more resistance. Just do higher repetitions if you are not looking to add bulk for a muscular physique. Higher reps of 12-15 is the perfect range for toning. No weights? No problem. Try using a sledgehammer or a kettlebell. These tools are easy to find and easy to store. Take a look here: http://drwatsonscyberoffice.blogspot.com/2011/02/put-occams-razor-in-action-literally.html to get a link to a YouTube video demonstrating the sledgehammer routine and read a discussion about kettlebells. When you're ready of course. Advance exercise only as tolerated.
