so, according to all the charts and things that I've seen, the middle of a healthy BMI range would put me at 140-141 lbs. I'm currently 228 with a body fat %age of 40.02%. meaning, my fat weighs 91.3468 lbs, and my "other" weight (muscle, water, bone, organs,e tc.) is 136.6632 lbs.

I look at those numbers and wonder... if i gain no more "other" weight and lose EVERY pound of "fat" weight, I'd be about 136-ish pounds. and i know that no body fat is not healthy. is it really possible for me to ever get to 140? or is my math off. (i'm no math major!) my ultimate goal right now is to get to a healthy BMI range, and the very upper end of that is 159. the lowest i ever remember weighing was in high school and i was 182 in my junior year.

i know the BMI has it's faults and doesn't account for body type... I'm just wondering is I should put so much pressure on myself to reach that "140" or if it would only disappoint me when I can't do that. any advice would be appreciated. thanks!

  • I would hope that you would gain other weight in the form of muscle. The higher your muscle mass the better off you will be. You need to exercise, diet alone is not great.

Also, muscle is leaner, so one pound of muscle takes up less space than one pound of fat (contrary to people's belief that muscle weighs more than fat...what is heavier a ton of feathers or a ton of gold? Hehe!)

Good luck on your weight loss journey!

i have been gaining the "other weight". when i first started, i was 326 with a body fat %age of 45.87% (fat weight of 108.25lb, other weight of 127.75lb). now i'm 228, BF% 40.06% (fat weight 91.3lb, other weight 136.7lb). I'm exercising 6-7 x/week, and i'm also close to but slightly under my calorie goal.
  • My advice would be to head for the top end of your healthy range, and then see how you feel. If you are happy at that weight and think it 'suits' you stick with it. If you think you could afford to keep going towards the middle of the range, then do that.

Good luck on your journey

I think we must be around the same type of body, because that what mine is as well with the top being 159 and the mid line being 140ish. The lowest I can ever remember is 179 and that was almost 3 years ago. My doctor is helping me with mine, and he wants me to get down between 160-170. And try to maintain that for awhile, so I don't yo-yo. I think I might aim for more like 155-165 and maintain that just so I'm in the healthy range. He told me if I can maintain that for awhile and then want to lose more he'd be fine with that, but since I can't remember the last time I was that size and the lowest in his records of me going to him which has been at least 6 years he just wants me to lose to 160ish and try to maintain. Not saying this is what to do for you, but might be something to think about. If I can get down to 170 even I'd be in heaven, but to see the looks on my husbands sisters faces if I get down to 155 would be awesome too!!

I wouldn't worry too much about a healthy BMI range in my opinion its far too generic what about people who have larger frames to those who have small frames; for me MY BMI would leave me at 140lb and I know due to my frame I would look ill. I'm going by how I feel about myself and my body how I feel in my clothes which I would like to be a UK size 14 whatever that weight is I'll take it as I feel that this is more important! x
