A little frustrated today. While I am losing pounds and fat, it is not coming off from where I want it to. How do I target fat loss in the hips/bum/thighs and not the chest??? Can this be done? I do a mix of cardio and strength...

I want new clothes, just not a new bra size.

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA

You can't target fat loss, your body will take it from the source is chooses (easiest for it to use), eventually if you lose enough you will lose the weight everywhere, including where you want it gone from and where you don't want to lose it.

Walking is probably best for that area as you will get bounce if you run? Or perhaps swimming or yoga would be good.. When I used a powerplate my bottom half was very slim.

You body will lose fat from where it wants, we cannot pick and choose.... you are doing the right thing though....cardio and strength training will help you lose fat and tone overall. Its a process! Stick it out... hard work and dedication will yeild positive results.

there's no way to target fat loss. As you get closer to your goal weight, fat will come off in other places too. I know exactly how you feel. My legs are currently amazing, but my tummy is flabby and my arms can't even fit in my sleeves. Nothing I do seems to make my arms thinner. But I am certain that eventually, when I weigh about 15 lb less, my arms and stomach will catch up to my awesome looking legs!

wouldnt you just rather get rid of the fat whereever it may be???
i'm afraid it works that way sorry!
  • Erik is right, unfortunately you can't target a specific area.... it gets taken from the easiest place. It's beyond me to understand why it's not my stomach or my jlo booty.... I always lose in the chest first. I think my stomach and rear start getting firmer when I start exercising, leaving the chest as one area that I don't have muscle forming. LOL.

The body will generally burn fat evenly, in the sense that it will come off in kind of uniformly-thin layers all over the body, so the bigger/thicker areas will be the last to go. That's why people generally struggle with those last trouble areas like the stomach, since they start out as the thickest areas.

unfortunately how we lose weight depends on genetics. I've also heard that fat burns off where it went most recently and what's been there longer will be the last to go. My personal opinion is genetics. I've lost everywhere except around my belly button. I still have a pouch there and figure that will be the last to go.

Remember - the more muscle you have the more fat burning you get through the day. Increase that muscle mass with some weight lifting!

I have heard the same thing, although I don't know how accurate it is. The first fat you put on, will be the last to come off. Again, I don't know how true that is, but in some ways it seems true.

Sadly, you can't target it. You can tone up the muscles underneath the fat, but that doesn't guarantee you'll lose fat there.

You just have to keep at it with cardio and strength training. Eventually, your body will have no choice but to start burning fat from your problem areas. It has taken about 7 months for my thighs to start losing fat, while my hips and waist went very fast. My thighs would be the first place I'd gain it back too so it's a double whammy.

You're not supposed to be able to target where you lose from but a few year ago I wanted to lose my bum so did something that can only be described as bum walking. (and cut out my nightly hot choc!) Sit on floor, legs slightly bent and shuffle forwards then backwards just using bum and heels...I lost 7 pounds and i think it all came off my bum as I lost 5 inches...no other measurements changed. I guess the vibroplates would work in a similar way

On the whole I dont think you can target where you lose from...not if you need to lose a more than a few pounds or not if you want to lose from certain places. I've found it will come off first from the last place it landed. Think back to your shape before you were carrying extra weight...thats pretty much where you'll land back at

I've read several articles about how hormones influence fat storage and use, particularly in the belly and hips. For example: http://www.thatsfit.com/2010/05/12/how-do-i-get-rid-of-saddlebags

I used to have a huge belly/butt (see profile pic) and have lost it all through diet and exercise. Mainly, I walk. A lot. Belly and hips are now in great shape. But as for the boobs... what boobs?? I'm flatter than when I was in 7th grade!!! Whatever. Haven't found a way to control that so... I'll just use push-ups ;-)

Lol...it was...me and a friend used to do it together chugging our bums round her living room and generally laughing at how silly each other looked but it worked for both of us, i guess it mainly toned but it was a significant difference!
  • Ok, one guy has to chime in too I guess though I have no comment regarding bra size (lol). I'm blessed to be naturally lean, its just that darn office-worker belly thats been my struggle. I have like zero fat anywhere else so I dont get why it is taking SO long to get the hot abs i'm looking for. There's really nowhere else for the fat to be burning from. I do pretty intense workouts (2-3 spin classes a week, 1-2 kickboxing classes with a hard-core instructor), mix things up (throw in some treadmill/eliptical and strength classes), blend cardio, weights and lots of core, etc. I've made progress in the past 1 1/2 yrs but not as much as i'd expect. This wasnt written to sound like bragging, but to say you're not alone. Bottom line I guess is that bodies are very complicated and we just need to keep pushing forward - Together!
