This sounds a little TMI, but I figure it's worth asking. I started taking 1 Equate Multivitamin last week, and ever since then I've had trouble going number 2. Can a multivitamin can cause constipation?

  • Does it have Iron in it? Iron can make you super constipated and unless your doc says you need it you shouldn't be taking a multivitamin with iron in it.

Yes, the extra calcium and iron can cause your feces to thicken, and therefore slows it's movement through your intestines. I'm experiencing the same thing. I talked to my doctor (I work here) and she advised drink lots of water and take Miralax. Extra water to counteract the effects of the Miralax.

Your body cannot become dependent on Miralax, and all it does is pull water from other parts of your body to soften your colon and allow poop to pass through more easily.
  • Yes! Iron will do this... or even if your body is not used to a vitamin. Give it time. Try taking a probiotic to help move things through! I actually use and sell great vitamins so believe me I had to learn about this cause the same happened to me. Work on taking things for digestive health and cut back on the iron until you get used to it. Sometimes I take a multi w/o iron most of the month and take my multi w/ iron when im on my period. Good luck to you!
