I have my setting as "sedentary" for my mfp settings because I sit in class 5 days a week. However I do work 2-3 days a week for six hours a shift on my feet. Should I change my setting, should I log this as fitness. Any other suggestion?

  • With the categories broken down how they have them, I would just leave it as sedentary.

i'm in a similar situation. i work in a warehouse stacking tires, and etc.. i my setting is postman, since i deliver the tires somedays and only stack them others. my wife on the other hand, changes her setting on a day to day basis. she works at the local blood bank. on the days she drives to the location she sets it one way, and the days she's in the office, she sets it another way. i know i didn't directly answer your question, i do hope that helps.

Since you have more inactive days than active I would log as sedentary and put in the work days as exercise. But, be sure you are not logging something like "6 hours walking" because that would inaccurately count twice the calories you are already counting in your "sedentary" setting. Only log the difference between sedentary and active setting, which is likely around 300 if you are standing, and maybe 500 to 600 if you are something like a waitress that is moving all over fast paced and carrying things for a 6-8 hr shift.

It's similar for me. I have a desk job, but if I clean or am unpacking or go walk at Walmart and the grocery for 2 hours on a weekend shopping, I log it as exercise. Whereas if I were a SAHM and cleaning and grocery shopping was part of what I do every day, I'd just set to moderately active to cover it and under eat a little if i had a day I happened to sit around.

I think what you need to figure out is...do you sit or lay down more than you are moving. I have class three days a week and am on the computer a lot for school but i am moving a lot during the day. So if you are moving more than sitting then i would change it:)

On this one I would say - are you usually over or under on your calories? If you are over, then upping your cals, odds are you will still go slightly over, so I would say, leave them low so as to not overeat. If you are usually under, then you might want to up them a little and assume that there will be days that you are still under, so you are averaging out on track for the week.

I suggest also, know what the difference MFP sets for you for sedentary vs slightly active. If it is, likely, about 300 calories, then just allow yourself to go over by about 300 on days you are working long shifts. The numbers are a guide. If you really just can't handle having red #s, then on those active days just log the difference as exercise.

Then, watch what your weight and inches do and adjust accordingly. I change mine a couple times a year depending on the season. Summer when it's too hot - sedentary. Spring / fall when it's nice - active. Winter when we're hauling firewood - active, but if we have the heat on that winter not hauling wood - sedentary. Don't be afraid do move it around! Though i would definitely NOT go through the hassle of swapping it every day depending on what you are doing - just log the exercise or under eat (whichever is appropriate to the way you have it set)

I think I will just add exercise equivalent to if I changed my settings for the day. I find I am hungrier on the days I work.
