Can someone recommend a good home gym or weight bench that offers resistance training? We are looking for a piece of equipment where we get get some strength training at home. At the moment we would like to keep it under 500, I MAY be able to talk husband into spending 600, but anything 500 and under would be perfect. Thank you

I found Total Gym 1800, Fitness Quest Pilates Power Gym and Jillian Michaels Ultimate Body Shop for great prices, but not sure how great of an overall workout we could get from either of them.

Thanks for any suggestions

I strongly recommend PowerBlock dumbells. Precor home fitness stores carry them, and they sometimes show up used on craigslist. They are extremely versatile. I have never regretted getting them and recommend them to everyone. I also suggest you get one of the models that can be upgraded to take more weight in the future. I have the "Sport 9.0" - http://www.powerblock.com/Sportseries.php

If you get these plus a bench, it may push you over the $500 budget, but well worth it in my opinion.

That sport block seems like a bit of a waste to me. I mean, I could buy it, but I'd use 3-6 of the sets included. For me and what I do personally, it'd be a waste. And I'm sure for her, since she's wanting resistence training, they'd be a waste too. Check craigslist, there are always some good "Christmas" deals.

What about all those dumbells in your 2nd photo, are they a waste? One set of powerblocks replaces a whole rack of dumbells.

Thanks but I am not looking for a suggestion on dumbells at the moment. Currently am happy with just the 3 and 6lb hand weights I have. Currently looking for a home gym or bench similar to those I asked about in first post

    Thanks again

Sorry, I was mistaken about what resistance training means. I thought it was a synonym for weight training, but it's not.

"Resistance training should not be confused with weightlifting, powerlifting or bodybuilding, which are competitive sports involving different types of strength training with non-elastic forces such as gravity (weight training or plyometrics) rather an immovable resistance (isometrics, usually the body's own muscles or a structural feature such as a doorframe)."

Have you checked out the TRX system yet? We have it at our gym and it's really versatile.

There are all kinds of workouts posted on youtube for it too. I recommend it highly.

I have heard that this one is pretty good. It is at Walmart and I am planning on getting one myself in a few weeks. Here is a link: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Gold-s-Gym-XR45-Home-Gym/14234886

something like this is probably your best bet, you can grow with it and it's very versatile, and if you check on craigslist you can find them all the time for 500 or under, I got one for 300, that's better then the one here.

Check second hand places for a power rack and barbell with weights and a bench. I got mine second hand for $450 but that is in Australia.
