Half marathon, anyone?

I ran a half marathon four years ago. Since then, I've been an on-again, off-again runner. Right now I can run about 3-4 miles, and there is a half marathon coming up in November.

Part of me is a little nervous, but another part of me says, "You did it before! You can do it again!"

Anybody else interested in running a half marathon?

    13 miles = 1/2 marathon.

I am running a 10 mile race at the end of August once I complete that, if my knees can handle it, i am going for the 1/2!!

Have you researched the training programs on runnerworld or coolrunnings or jeffgalloway.com?

I would LOVE to run in a marathon, or any other kind of race... I run a couple times a week anyway, but I want someone to run with for the first couple times, since I've never done any races.

I'd love to run a half marathon! I'm running a 10K on the 4th...but don't think I'll be able to run the whole thing. I'm like you I can run about 3-4 miles right now, but I definitely want to increase my mileage. I love running races!

You guys are awesome! I just started running about 6 weeks ago, and am planning on running a fun run on July 4th, only a mile. Need to take the higher altitude into account, but right now I can do 1 1/2 mile without stopping, so I figure I should be able to do it without walking. Would love to get up to more miles, how do you do it??

I've been thinking about doing this. What a great motivator to actually push oneself! I absolutely suck at running though, and summer is a terrible time for me (I must be hot blooded or something). Look, I'm already making excuses and I haven't even committed to anything yet!

I've ran in two 1/2 marathon's before my son was born....7 yrs ago....and was training for my first and only marathon back in 99 when I got pregnant....so ah that put things on hold. LMBO

After I had my son, I've never ran much more than 8 miles....and did a 10k race a few years ago...which was great! (Tufts 10K in Boston is amazing if anyone is in that area in Oct...totally worth it!!!)

But now that I'm trying to get back up there...so far the most has been 4 miles....I'm thinking I'd love to try for a half marathon....but first I need to set my goals on 10k's....work your way up, a racing environment is amazing and a great way to get yourself ready for the bigger races.

I'd find a few 5k's....do those...then work your way up to 10k's and etc....I think November is a good amount of time to get to your goal....

hugs and best of luck...and happy running!!!

There is one in sioux falls, SD September 7. I'm about 90% sure I"m doing it (I have until the end of july to sign up). I'm doing a 4 mile race tonight, then I think I'm doing a 10K July 19. I'm a little nervous because my hip flexor is brothering me (at least that's what the girl @ the gym thinks since it only hurts when I run - hopefully it'll improve with stretching.)

If you make a training plan it will be much easier. I am sure you can find a lot of help with that online. I am no runner, but I woulod say with the right training you will most definitely be able to meet your goal. Do small steps like 10% increase per week. A week rest with no running after 4 weeks. Than a significant increase the next cycle. Keep doing that until maybe 2 -3 weks before the race. No speed or strength. Just basic endurance. Then in the last weeks you do some intervals. Plan for a week rest before the event.
Keep track of your training in a journal. Helps correcting mistakes, writing down good experiences and helps you visualize where you are in your training.

Most important of all, don't forget to have fun!

I remember my training program a few years ago for the half marathon, but I may have to mix it up a bit now that I'm working and not in college. It went something like this:

Monday - class (usually did kickboxing or something)
Tuesday - short run (4-5 miles)
    Wednesday - eliptical & arms
Thursday - short run (4-5 miles)
    Friday - swim & legs
Saturday - long run (5-10 miles)
    Sunday - rest

I didn't run more than 10 miles when training. The half marathon is mid-November, so if I could work my way up to running 5 miles (right now I run 3-4) then I should be OK to train.

I know there are running threads on here ... how do they work?

I am thinking of doing one Sept 28th.

I'm going to purchase the book by John Stanton call "running from start to finish" and go from there. I hear it's really good for beginners and it was recommended to be by a marathon runner.
Because this will be my first one, my only goal is to finish it. I don't care if it takes me 3 hours, as long as I cross that finishing line, I'll be happy.

I'm signed up to do a half-marathon on July 27th. I've been training for a few months now and I'm ready. If I can do it, I say anybody can. My advice is to just go for it. I run 3 or four times a week (about 5 miles or so, but I vary it), but one of runs each week is a long run. I started with 5, then increased my miles slowly by a mile each week until I got to 12. It's not that hard to run one more mile than last week. When you get to being able to go about ten miles, look on-line and find a run to sign up for. You can do it! Good luck!:flowerforyou:

I did a couple half marathons
    a few triathalons too.
Use to run most every day.
Thought it was the healthy thing to do.

now ankles go snap crackle and pop
    'bout twenty times a day
    knees with aches and pains
just feelin' so old and gray

    Got the low down
    1 billion repetitions
    of pavement pounding
    bone grinding
    One half marathon running
    Blu uu uu uu uesssss

And my baby she up and left me
to oo oo oo oo oo oooooooo

I felt that way before as well. My husband is a runner and he helped me a lot, telling me to start with shorter strides and when running you should be able to hold a somewhat breathless conversation while on your run. That's how you'll know you aren't overdoing it.
