I read in the paper this morning that new study reveals for optimum heart health limit sodium intake to 1500 mg per day. :noway:

I like to keep my sodium intake at that level. Very rarely do I get up to the 2500 MFP has listed.

I generally keep it at about that. The less processed foods I eat, the easier it is.
  • Yep, that's about right. Definitely watch your sodium intake!
  • sodium is a big elecrolyte in your heart. To much can actually throw your heart into an arrhythmia

Yep! Eating fresh whole foods really cuts the amount of sodium you consume!

Yep, actually the research on sodium is very interesting because if you get into the nitty gritty details of it, it doesn't actually indicate that getting down to 2500mg is helpful to heart health or blood pressure at all. It's only really at intakes of 20-40mmol (460-920mg) that the marked differences consistently occur. I think the discrepancy in recommendations vs best possible result is to do with practicality. You have to remember that the low sodium research was prompted when someone found that an all rice diet lowered blood pressure... now that's one way to get your sodium down!!

I just started monitoring my sodium intake more and I try to make sure I drink at least 10 glasses of water daily (adding 2 more glasses next week). My goal is to shoot for 1500-1700mg of sodium but definitely no where near the 2500 allowed.
