Hi everyone, I figured I would drop by the forums and see what was going on :P I mostly use the android app for MFP, but I recently figured I'd see what the website portion was all about. I like the social-network-y feel of it, the support and such.
A little about me:
My name is Sam, I'm a 21-year-old college student, double majoring in Psychology and Biology. I have struggled with weight my whole life, and it's been a source of low self esteem for quite some time. I was always the skinny person in the family until I hit puberty. I put on a lot of weight when i was about 12 and I was never able to lose it. All through high school I was still rather heavy, and I hated it. When I graduated high school I became a vegetarian (for personal reasons) and I although I didn't own a scale, I would say I lost 20lbs+. I was a little happier with myself, but slowly over the last 4 years that weight has been creeping back on, and I finally decided to do something about it. One of my biggest motivations is that both of my parents have diabetes (as well as numerous family members) and I have been told by doctors that decreasing my weight and paying better attention to my diet will significantly decrease the chances of me ever having to deal with it.
On January 8th, I was browsing through apps on my phone and I came across MFP. I figured, what could it hurt? That day I set my goals, and I haven't looked back since. I went out and bought a scale, and I weighed in at 219 - a number that made me cringe, for sure. I renewed my gym membership and made a promise to myself to keep going, and I have gone at least 3x a week since then. I'm on week 4 of c25k, plus I do strength training/weights 30min and another 30min on a stationary bike at high resistance.
To date, I have lost a total of 22lbs, putting me at 197. Seeing that number go under 200 was fantastic. My friends and family have started to notice a difference, and even some of my customers have mentioned it to me (I work in retail).
My current goal is 170 (I'm 5'8", btw) because I feel that is a realistic starting goal. I will probably make another once I reach that point, but we will see.
Anyway, that's my story, I'm looking forward to being a part of this community!
