So am I hurting myself with "losing weight" when I go over on my sodium?? It only allows me about 2500 daily and today I was 1000+ over...Is this becoming my downfall??

Well I've read that in order to lose weight you should consume no more that 1200-1500mg per day. It's one silent culprits that can hinder your weight loss efforts. Maybe you should try cutting back and see how that works for you.0

I can't really tell by your nationality if you are black american but if you are 1500 mg is the maximum you are allowed. Not 2500.0

It is not just a matter of weight. It is also a matter of health. The guidelines for the maximum amount of sodium a person should eat in a day are less than the default 2500 in MFP. For some groups it is as low as 1500 a day. I shoot for 1800, but probably should go for 1500 since I have had blood pressure problems and have had a stroke. If you are healthy, seek to remain that way and find an way to lower your sodium. Look at your diary, and find the items or meals that are high in sodium, and see how you could make them with less sodium. Little changes for the better add up.0

Sodium is killer!!! I had the hardest time with the whole sodium issue when I first started out. I just didn't see any way I could get my calories in without it. I learned a lot by checking out my friends food diaries. It really is possible to do it! I made THE MOST INCREDIBLE taco salad tonight and the entire meal was around 550 mg of sodium. A taco salad in a mexican restaurant is 1500-2000 mg of sodium, and mine was waaaaayyy better :drinker: . My food diary is public, so feel free to check it out if you want to! Good luck and happy lower sodium eating!0

I would say yes. Not that you can't lose weight with it, but you'll hold on to the water and bloat.
I posted pics a while back regarding my own experiment after a week of watching my sodium. I watch it a lot now. You can check out my food diary.
My results were awesome. My pooch went away within 5 days. No joke.0 -
Thanks all, this was something that I was figuring but wanted clarification!!0

ayeeeee I had to make sure lol Yeah I try to stay under 1500. You will see the difference in water retention. It rarely happens to me.0 -
Yeah I was gonna send you to That Girl's post but I see she replied. I've been inspired. I have really paid attention to sodium more. With mild hypertension I am really supposed to be keeping it down even though I have a water pill that flushes it out. When I get it consistently around 1500 I may ask my Dr. to try out other pills but hopefully with a little weight loss(30-40 lbs) I can get off them again.0

LOL that was funny!!! Yes beautiful black woman here! As are you!! :-)0

I've never really cared/paid much attention to my overall sodium intake and it's never seemed to stall out my losing. I steadily lost 1-2 pounds every week up until I started working out. At that point I stopped losing weight as rapidly but continued losing inches pretty steadily. I plateaued around the end of November, took December off from trying to lose (ate my maintenance calories that month) started back to loss calories after the new year and have been losing about .5 pounds a week.
I also don't exist without a water bottle in my hand, from the moment I wake up, right until bedtime, I'm drinking water. We have a purifier hooked up to the water line at work and I have a water cooler in my apartment and I don't drink anything but water,so it's possible that I'm just constantly keeping my system flushed, but it's never been an issue for me.
But that's just my experience, exeryone is different.0 -
Don't get to stressed about your sodium level. Yes, to much to often is bad but at times 2500 can be hard to stay under.
Make sure you drink lots of water the days that this happens. Water will help flush a lot of that out of your system, even though people believe it will keep that water in you. It wont!0
