Which Target Heart Rate Method Do You Use?

I have heard of several methods to determine the best target heart rate for fat burning. I'm currently listed as being between 127 and 166 for my heart rate zone.

But I have looked at the other method, which is
220 minus your age
the result x 70%

This would put my target heart rate pinpointed at 136.5.

While I am frequently working out at this rate, I'm not always and I occasionally find it difficult to get up to that when I'm doing some of my slower, lower cardio, like hula hooping. With hooping, it isn't necessary to get up to 135+ in order to burn the max amount of calories per minute (about 10 calories per minute) I can do that at about 120-125.

Anyone have actual expertise in this area? Any personal trainers who have a better idea of how to handle this so I can workout to the best of my ability to burn the most calories and the most fat?

I don't know the math (or method) as it was my trainer that set the numbers for me, but at a resting heart rate of 62, at 37 yrs old, my "Fat Burning" target zone is 95 - 129. When I go over 129, my HRM changes from "fat burner" to "fitness" mode....

    hope that helps.

I would love to see some responses here. I have yet to visit my doctor and ask him (I really, really need to) but my heart rate at rest is usually over 100. (from 95-110) so any sort of exercise shoots it up to the 130s, 150s easily. When I'm really trying, or doing my jogging and running, it goes to 190 before I start to feel flush and slow it down.

If my target rate is 136.5 (same age as you!) then I just need to wiggly my toosh while using the computer here and I'll probably get it up there.

No idea what to think about this whole heart rate thing.
