alright every one either has it, got rid of it, or is a freak of nature who was born with out it. i hate my belly fat so much! i am in the last 7 days of 30 day shred and i have already lost 3" in my waist at the naval. BUT that damn spare tire i have hasnt seemed to budge! ok it has a little but only one inch. i was just wondering if anyone has experienced success with the dreaded belly pooch. i am trying to cut down on sodium and i have read that if u do a bunch of ab workouts but still have belly fat that it will actually make you look bigger. but wondering do i need to do more cardio? and if so whats good? like maybe jogging? idk is there foods that are better and dont go straight to your mid section?
any advise would be amazing! i know there are a million and one women who have conquered their weight loss goals. come on and pass the torch :D

  • Hi,

Lifting weights, scrunches, sit ups build muscle only they do not get rid of fat. As far as weight loss, belly fat goes, its calories basically. You have to lose the weight and its impossible imo to target a specific area to lose it from. Belly fat seems to be the last to go for many of us, I feel your pain. If you find a magic cure let me know. I'll be interested in seeing the responses you get, I'm hopeful I learn something! Cardio to burns calories and eating less is the only way I know to lose weight.

Hi there, it's funny this question came up because I checked out a book at the library called "Belly fat Gone" and it talks about this....it said the only way to truly get rid of the belly fat was to eat healthy, no junk food, trans fat, fried foods etc. Drinking lots of water helps and exercise but it takes a good diet and lots of time to get it down. You said you were exercising I think....just gonna take some time. I'm working on that too!! Hope this helps:)
  • Haha! I have the same problem! I have heard that eating sugar is what causes belly fat and if I were to stop eating it, it would go away. I just started this, so I don't know, but I am going to try! Unfortunately I am not a freak of nature like that and am guessing a lot of it has to do with genetics and how we all carry our weight in different places.
  • I'm in the same boat with you. I absolutely hate my stomach. I seemed like my stomach is the last thing to go on my body. It just seems to hang around. What works for me is a combo of cardio and strength. Jillian Michaels came out with a new dvd called 6 week 6 pack. It is pretty good. Also, running for me is a great ab workout. Good luck

Oops sorry the name of the book is "Belly OFF! Diet by Jeff Csatari. Some really good info in it but main focus is on the food we eat. Learning what to substitute for a healthy meal to lose that belly fat. Also goes over some great exercises.
  • More cardio would do the trick. Thats how i lost most of mine after i had my baby. Of course i gained it all back times ten these past two years. But more cardio! and drink lots of water. so much water in fact! Get a brida, i hate stupid people that use so many water bottles, its such a waste and in my opinion doesnt taste half as good. Bob Harper says in one of his work out tips on youtube that it will boost your metabolism, make your skin insanely beautiful and you wont be as tired! He said he recommends 8 to 11 glasses a day and no less! He says its the number one keys to exercise. So more water and cardio should help! :D

Yep, I hate looking down and see that 'little', okay, not really little, pooch starting back at me...

30 Day Shred did help me shed some inches in that area though but again, like everyone says, you can't spot reduce and since our belly probably has the most fat it will more than likely go last. Drink lots of water definitely helps, strengthen your core, do your cardio and just keep going at it. It will happen if we just keep doing what we do and not give up. I have to believe that at least!

I always start my posts by saying it but I'm no expert... What worked for me to lose my post baby belly was 4-5 1hr sessions per week of cardio and 10mins pilates per day. As the weight has come off I have increased the time spent doing pilates and thrown in crunches and weight training to tone up. I drastically cut down on sugar and carbs and always cook home made meals. I also drink tonnes of water. As I've got nearer my goal weight I've taken the attitude of "everything in moderation" as opposed to eliminating things completely. This is because my stamina is higher so working out more and I have less to lose so my calorie intake changed slightly along with my other goals. Now I don't feel guilty if I have a tiny chocolate piece.

As I said, it worked for me. Everyone is different. Good luck!

Unfortunately, as the old saying goes "abs are made in the kitchen". All you can do is ensure you eat healthy and exercise regularly. There is no magic bullet, single exercise, pill or potion that will do it.

I too have a big ol' belly!! I'm 5'3" and short-waisted and have had two pregnancies carrying my rather large boys. Cardio is key - and cardio in your fat burn zone is most important. Granted my stomach will never look normal again, it will go down as i lose weight. The other thing that is beginning to work is cutting the sugar out of my diet - I was taking in over 110 grams on average a day. Now, it's about 1/2 that. So my advice from experience is 1) cardio in fat burn zone, 2) reduce sugar intake and 3) sodium is always key. O, the other thing - eating small meals every 2-3 hours. I started a new nutrition plan and the weight is falling off - granted it's only water at this point but for 40 days the scale did not move.

I have that belly fat too and HATE it BUT since doing Zumba I have found it is going down more and mroe every day :) so I think I have found what works for me - a calorie controlled diet and lots of Zumba :) ( I try and do it every night - I have a dvd at home) and I am definitely noticing it getting smaller - Ive tried forever to get rid of it with no luck and end up wearing bridget Jones knickers to pull it in lol!!!
  • This is typical for everyone who is overweight. You have to lose body fat in order to get rid of your pooch. (Now if you've had c-sections, pregnancies, more than likely your skin is stretched and there's nothing you can do about that other than surgery).
The reason you don't see your abs is because of the body fat. This next statement is key.....

YOU HAVE TO GAIN MUSCLE TO LOSE FAT

When losing weight, the way to lose just fat is by adding strength training into your fitness program. Don't try to lose weight simply by performing cardio. The pounds you lose through cardio will come right back if you stop the cardio, without muscle mass to keep the weight off. Don't worry about bulking up or gaining too much muscle. For the majority of the population, it's simply not a concern. When you add muscle, you improve the body fat composition ratio, which is the main goal.

The lower your body fat % the leaner you get and the more you will see your abs.
