I am not a bread person, but now I think bread might be a good way add some needed nutritional benefits. I am looking for a bread the is low cal, taste good, and is hearty (not a fan of white bread). I have enjoyed Preppridge farm 15 grain bread. What are your suggestions? Oh, I have a bread machine so I would be interested in recipes too.

  • I really like the sara lee 45 calorie delighful wheat bread. tastes great and is only 90 calories for 2 slices!
  • I actually really like the Weight Watchers whole grain bread. It's 100 calories for 2 slices and it tastes pretty good!

try some of the Alverado St Bakery breads (if they are in your area) or Ezekiel breads. Regular grocery stores don't always carry them, but you can look in the frozen section of the organic/health areas. I would recommend spending the extra money for an organic bread--the Pepperidge Farm types look good (and as long as they are whole grain--no "enriched flour" added and don't have any high fructose corn syrup) but they are made with a very poor quality wheat. Still, from the regular bread aisle they are probably your best bet.
    Good luck!

There are loads of great bread recipes on allrecipes.com. There are specific recipes for bread machines, (I don't have one so I adapt them and make without), and you can get creative- you can try bagels, foccacia, pita pockets, etc.
I love the Amish white bread from that site, but I always use less sugar than called for, and I use a mix of flour, white and wholemeal. Making your own bread is awesome! Start with simple loaves, then try adding in things.
  • Definitely Sara Lee 45 calories and delightful. But there is another brand that is only 35 calories per slice, just don't remember the name!

If you like english muffins or bagels..... Thomas has really great 1/3 of your daily fiber betterstart multigrain muffins. They are only 100 calories each. Thomas also has bagel thins that are plain, multi grain, etc....And those are only 110 cals each.

If you need sandwich buns..... Aunt Millie's has "slimwiches" that are only 90 calories; you can get multi grain, hawaiian, potato or plain. They are delish!
  • I use Natures Own Double Fiber wheat bread. Its 100 calories for 2 servings.

I prefer Arnold brand...yeah it's a bit higher cal...but there are no artifical ingredients and the texture is great.

Also...if you want to make your own...I suggest going to the King Arthur Flour website...tons of bread recipes, many of which are whole grain.
