Do I have to eat the "extra" calories I earned?

I have a question. I just "earned" 599 calories through exercise so it was added to my calorie allowance. Is it ok if I dont eat that amount more of calories for the day or will I be going into starvation mode?

You should eat them to stay on target. You need to replenish your energy stores and not get hungry.
Recovery is important to excercise programs, nutrition as well as rest.0 -

If your net calories is below 1200 on a regular basis (calories eaten - calories burnt through exercise) your body can go into what's seen as starvation mode. It's always best to try and eat most of these back.
If however, you just aren't hungry enough that day and it's like a one off it won't do any harm, I think it only becomes a problem for those who regularly don't eat any or very few exercise calories back.0 -

That is probably the #1 debate on here. Some say yes, others argue no. I ended up going to my doctor and asking her. At first I wasn't eating them at the request of my trainer. I ended up very sick. The calories we need is different for everyone...body size, sex, activity level. I have gone from only eating 1200 calories and eating none of my exercise calories to eating 1500 net calories a day. At 1200 calories I also stopped losing. Now that I am up to 1500 I started losing again. You're going to get answers that contradict each other on here. I printed out my goals sheet and took it in to my docs. She went over the numbers with me and I had to change several of the figures (carbs, sodium, fat, protein). I would ask a professional....but that is just my opinion. Listen to your body.0

Thank you everyone! I have been eating 1200-1400 calories a day whether I worked out or not. Sometimes I was burning up to 1000 calories in my workout and not eating those. I have only lost 3 pounds and 3 inches in two months so this could be the major problem. I also figured out I was eating to much sugar so I am cutting that out. THank you for your feedback! It really did help!0

You don't HAVE to. You won't go into starvation mode unless you're at an under calorie limit for awhile. Once and awhile...or a week at a time...no biggie. I say, as long as your net is over 1200, you don't need to eat them back. You'll just lose faster if you don't!0
