Eating after exercise?

So I've seen it alot that you are supposed to eat protein after exercise. Now, my question is why? For example, it's 10:30pm and I just finished working out. I am in no way actually interested in food--is it detrimental to me not to eat?

No matter the time after a hard workout you gotta get that protein in there, u got bout 40 min to do it after working out0

I work out late too and I just am not up for any heavy food. That's why I go the protein shake route. I usually wait about 20 mins for my stomach to be settled enough and then drink it.0
