Just read "Appetites: Why Women Want" by Caroline Knapp. It's a great read - for everyone not just women! - I highly suggest it.
The author struggled with anorexia for years, but she addresses the issue of appetite in the context of all desires/needs - the hunger not just for food, but for love, for acceptance. She uses lots of examples - women using food to cope, women using sex/love to cope, women hurting themselves or pushing themselves to make more money, and lots of other examples to demonstrate that we're all hungering for something much deeper.
It was definitely an eye opener. Check it out if you get a chance!
