Weighted hula hoop- tips and calories?

I bought myself a weighted hula hoop but am not sure how many calories it counts as. To be honest I spend more time picking it up from the floor than rotating it but hopefully that will come with time! Anyone else do this?

I have one and when first starting out you will spend more time picking it up then twirling it around on your waist, but each day it gets easier and easier and soon you'll be able to keep it up longer. I have a heart rate monitor and that's how I calculate how many calories I burn.0

I was wondering the same thing and I came across this website....http://spinninghoop.com/hula-hoop-exercises/calories.htm0

To be truthful, a weighted hoop is actually easier to use than a non-weighted hoop so your calories will be slightly less than with a non-weighted hoop. For instance, if I use a 2 pound hoop, I burn about 400 calories per hour. But if I use a 1 pound or lighter hoop, I burn about 600 calories per hour.
This will, of course, depend on your heart rate and how much work you are putting in. I am presently training to be a certified hooping instructor so my calorie burn is pretty high...much higher than other people I have encountered.
But once you get the hang of it, you'll never burn less than about 200 calories per hour, even if you're doing it rather slow...literally, if you're just standing there swinging it around your hips for an hour, you'll probably burn about 200 calories. My swing is pretty fast and I burn about 200 in a half hour on my wimpy days.0 -

I want to point out that I wouldn't listen to the web site featured in adbeddin's post. That is inaccurate. A weighted hoop doesn't really increase your cardio. If you really want to increase cardio and burn more calories get free weights- between 2 and 5 lbs and hold them up and do arm exercises while you hoop. That will really get your heart pumping and increase the cardio value of the workout.0 -
Might have to work up to that, at the moment I need my spare hands to pick the thing up after I drop it every 30 secs! Really thought a weighted one would be better though, doh0

Per webMD 7 calories per minute if heart rate gets to about 150.0
