How do the HRMs work exactly??? It shows your heart rate but how do you know how many calories are burned?

literally, you push a button and it shows up---provided you purchase a HRM that provides that info. You will enter your height, weight, gener, age, etc into it when you purchase it and that information is used to calculate calories burned based on where your heart rate is as well.

Your heart rate monitor doesn't have the option to also show how many calories you're burning?

i just got mine but it seems to work great so far. mine came with a chest strap and after i put in my weight and other stats, i just push the on button when i start my workout and it starts tracking. i hit the recall on mine after my workout and it gives me all my stats, including the calories burned. pretty neat. i would recommend getting one. you'll see more accurate results with it.

I love my heart rate monitor. It shows my heart rate and calories burned, plus it wirelessly downloads to my computer where I can see the graph of my workout (good for knowing when I've worked hard, and where I rested / slacked off). It's a watch with a chest strap (Garmin F60). I hope this image works.....

OK good it worked! You need to program your HRM with your weight, age and sex, as these factors all affect how many calories you burn at various intensity levels (ie heavy people burn more cals that lighter people for the same exercise).

Mine automatically shows calories burned as long as you have plugged in your stats (weight, height, age, sex, etc.) I'd look up your brand and model online if you can't find the calories burned.

mine not only gives me all that info, but it downloads instantly to my computer when I get close to it -- it GPS' my run or walk and then if I do that same route in the future, it compares all my data for me. It puts everything on a calendar for me along with goals I set along the way. My HRM is my new best friend --- it's taken working out to a whole new level. I was really struggling with running, then once I got a HRM and learned how to control my heart rate, running clicked it was amazing -- a month ago I couldn't run 8 minutes without dying, two weeks ago I ran a 10k - the whole way without stopping.Best tool Ever! I have the Garmin Forerunner

How accurate is the calorie burn count on a hrm? I just bought a Polar FT7. The chest strap it came with now replaces the strap that came with my elliptical. Today I worked out for 40 minutes being in the "fitness" zone for about 30 minutes or so. according to the elliptical I burnt 450 calories but the hrm only showed 300. This is a significant difference especially if I want to eat half of my exercise calories. If that is true I have been overestimating my calorie burn for weeks. somewhat disappointed...

So does the HRM warn you when you're HR is too high? Do you then run a little slower?

Likely the HRM is more accuate than the machines count, but both are estimates based on mathematical formulas. If you entered all you information correctly the HRM will be more accurate. Here is a good article on it. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/Azdak/view/the-real-facts-about-hrms-and-calories-what-you-need-to-know-before-purchasing-an-hrm-or-using-one-21472
