This is such a heartbreaking issue. Working in the schools I see overweight and obese children all over. We are completely failing these kids. Ultimately it's the parents responsibility, but society has a huge hand in it as well, and I feel that if the parents aren't taking care of it, or don't know what to do, then the rest of us have got to step in. (this is why I didn't have an issue with the ban on Happy Meals.) We definitely need to start with the schools, I think it's great that there are free lunch programs, even for the summer, and breakfast, and even afternoon snacks for after school programs. But they have got to change what they are feeding the kids. Sure they have a full salad bar, but not too many kids are eating fruits and vegies when they have pizza and cake.0

Very good read and I am totally on board with you. I was not always overweight, but instead, gained most of it when I began to drive, and could run through mcdonalds any time I wanted. With that, when my daughter was born, my hubby and I vowed that we would always do our best to keep her healthy and teach her the right food habits. She is only 18 months old, but if you give her a chicken nugget in one hand and a banana or yogurt in the other, she'll drop that nugget faster than you'll blink.
Weight, eating habits, along with MANY MANY other things are going awry in our world today, and our children are suffering. It's our right and responsibility as adults and parents to promote good health.
Big props to you for this one!0 -
Very good point. I think a lot of it has to do with our society's surroundings. I mean really, there aren't many kids out there who are healthy. They're either too skinny [anorexic] or too fat [obese]. I blame the celebs, who are stick thin who every girl wants to be like, and the non-restricted advertisements of fast food. But it can also come from family, and friends. I can honestly say I was "skinny Minni" up until middle school. That was when my cousins moved in with us. Then I started having the mentality of "Oh, well, if Bud is gonna eat TWO sandwiches, so am I!", and so came my downfall into the pit of being overweight... Soo much harder to get out of than it was to get in!!0
