Endurance and lungs

Anyone really struggle with endurance during a cardio workouts?? I’ve been an on-and-off workout type of person for the past 10 years (I’m 37 now). I just started doing the Supreme 90 Day program. I’m 12 days into it and the cardio workouts beat me up, and I would think after eating well and being religious with these workouts, my lungs would feel a “little” stronger (if it is the lungs even). I drink the water before and during so I am hydrated. I went hiking with my buddy, his wife, and his mother-in-law the other day and they seemed to be flying up the mountain and I’m huffing and puffing just to keep up, and they don’t workout as much as me. I also was a hockey player in grade school and high school and my endurance back then wasn’t even that good. Does anyone have any ideas or thought??? When I get sick I usually have a hard time kicking the chest congestion, could I have a serious problem or slow twitch muscles make up??? I don’t know….any feedback would be great. Thank you.

Its your Vo2 max that generally makes up your cardio-ability. You can work out all you want but in order to push your Vo2 max, aka your ability to transport oxygen and have more endurance, you need to work out closer to your Vo2 max more often and for longer. Just cause you're eating right doesn't mean your lungs will be stronger.

it takes anyone time to build up endurance.
  • You need to see a doctor and have them do a pulmonary function test. Do it as soon as you can - if you have a problem with your lungs, the sooner you know it, the sooner you can do something about it. Good luck!
  • Endurance certainly takes time, and some stuff will be easier for you than others.

That said, a checkup couldn't hurt. I have exercise-induced asthma that makes it super hard to breath when doing cardio. I have an inhaler - as long as I use it 20 mins before a workout, things are much, much better.

I had croup and pneumonia as a baby, and have other respiratory issues - my lungs aren't as strong as they could be. The inhaler makes ALL the difference.
