Hello MFP,

Let me start out by saying this is my first ever post on the message boards. I am inquiring to those who have lost more than 100lbs without the help of weight loss surgery. I am currently down since starting my journey around 58 pounds. I feel healthier than I ever have before and I am working very hard at the gym. I know I am working muscles and keep things tight but I was curious....Did loose skin ever become an issue? I am not experiencing anything yet but I am wondering at what point my skin might start to sag? I have talked to many people who have issues with skin but I usually find out that they have had some type surgery to jump start the weight loss.
It took me about 6 months to drop the weight and I have been maintaining the remaining 6 months with just eating the right balanced meals and working out. Does skin start to sag if you are losing weight by working out? My ultimate goal is about 40 pounds away give or take and I was wondering if anyone had any experince with this issue.

Thanks MFP friends and everyone keep up the good work :-)

Hi! I've lost 120 lbs the natural way. As long as you do some weight training as well, loose skin shouldn't be a huge issue.
You should be fine in the next 6 months!
Great Job and keep it up!

My circumstances are similar to yours: I have lost over 50# and if I hit my target weight, will be about 95# from my start point.

It depends. If you are younger, you may not have any problems. But if you are older, skin begins to lose elasticity over time, so it just doesn't spring back like it should. While some of the sagginess can be attributed to underlying fat, addressing that still might not take care of all the problems. My arms are slowly but surely shaping up...my belly (area under the belly button) not so much.

I know someone that lost well over 100# and is now a "figure model." She is incredibly cut and not an ounce of fat, or saggy skin, on her. But she also worked VERY hard for that and ate much cleaner than most of mere mortals ever would.

    Hi There
I am Told that loose skin should not be a problem if you loose weight at a good healthy rate. To fast and thats when it becomes a problem.
Well done and good luck with your goal.

I dont have any problem with extra skin at all, kinda lucky. I do notice I could continue to work on my mid section, my legs are muscular and my arms are getting prettty lean. I lost all the skin, the hanging skin from an increase in resistance on the eliptical and staying on it for hours on end, lol

I think, by the end of summer, what excess I have, mostly in my mid section will be the past, Im now learning how to do lunges and use that big ball to do my sit ups, which I hate with a passion

Best wishes as well as congratulations on your weight loss......Lloyd

I am working out extra hard and I have started doing some weight lifting and toning classes. I notice a 2 or 3 pound weight increase but the following week it's gone with a couple extra to spare ;-) I feel much better knowing that as long as I'm working it off slow and steady I'm not gonna have any skin!!!! I am so inspired by the people who have lost over 100lbs doing it all natural!!! You are truly an inspiration :-)
  • Your young and hopefully blessed with the kind of skin we all want. The type that retracts back. I work with a Plastic Surgeon and we see people come in with weight loss and wants surgery done cosmetically. Unfortunately for some if you have been overweight for a while and for those that lose, gain and lose again the skin stretches and sags. No matter how slow you lose or workouts you do, nothing will help but surgery. I for one will have to go through surgery. I have been overweight and i have done the yo-yo diet for 23 years, so unfortunately i ruined my skins ability to tighten back after losing weight. But not to put you down, you on the other hand may not have to worry about it.

Your skin will do what it will do

Young and healthy skin are points in favour
Small deficits and slower loss is also a point in favour.
Giving it a year or two to finish tightening up also a point in favour.

Whether the points in favour will overcome gravity sufficiently for you to be happy... unknown!

I've lost 160lbs. From 388 to about 224 right now and still losing. I'm 33. I have noticed a bit of loose skin, but I think I have been really lucky that it is not bad. I have no issue walking around without a shirt on. I've tried to start to incorporate some weights and situps etc to tone up a bit, but it's not all that bad even now. Much better than I thought it would be.
