Homemade dog treats!

Lots of us have dogs! Thought I'd start a thread on homemade dog treats. 
I've tried a few, but this one is the winner so far:
Peanut Butter Oatmeal Dog Treats:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup rolled oats
2 cups whole wheat flour
1TBSP baking powder
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup milk
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper (or spray with Pam).
In large bowl, combine dry ingredients. Set aside.
Combine peanut butter and milk. ( I just whisk them together. ) Mix in dry ingredients.
Knead dough on lightly floured surface until dough is smooth. Roll to 1/4" thickness. Cut with cookie cutters ( I use fondant cutters to get smaller sizes) and place on cookie sheets. As long as they're not touching, they're far enough apart.
Bake 20 minutes. Cool before serving. To make them extra hard and crunchy (and extend shelf life) turn off oven at 20 minutes and leave treats in oven for another 45 minutes.
*Note-these have no preservatives. They're good for up to 2 weeks dry in airtight container. Up to 2 months frozen.

I am a full-time factory for these treats now! LOL
My own dog will eat ANYTHING, so she doesn't really qualify as a taste-tester. But friends and clients just can't get enough of these treats!
I typically make them with 2%milk and low-fat PB. But when I have made them at other people's homes with full fat milk and full fat PB, the big difference is the dough is wetter and the treats last only about ten days if not frozen.
Freeze what you can't use in 10 days in small ziplocs, and take them out as needed.
Make GREAT GIFTS to dog owners!0 -
I like this idea, but I was wondering if anyone had recipes that don't include wheat or wheat gluten? We have a shar-pei and they're allergic to wheat gluten, poor thing, his fur falls out! So if anyone could share one for my baby, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!0

I like this idea, but I was wondering if anyone had recipes that don't include wheat or wheat gluten? We have a shar-pei and they're allergic to wheat gluten, poor thing, his fur falls out! So if anyone could share one for my baby, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!
I think you could do this with any flour, really. The treats aren't meant to rise in the sense of a cake. I'd think you could grind (in a food processor) oats or rice to make a flour quite easily and sub it for the whole wheat flour.
The dogs like it because it has an intense PB smell. The flour is not the make or break portion of the recipe. You're aiming for a hard, dry treat!0 -
I'm going to test out a pumpkin dog treat recipe this weekend too, as we are almost out of the PB treats. Will keep you posted on how it turns out.0

Oh, if you don't have cookie cutters (the dog could not care less what the shape of the treat is), cut your dough with a knife or a pizza cutter of the rolling sort.
For gifting, it's cute to have a cookie cutter that is doggy in some way-bones, fire hydrants, etc. But not needed!0 -
My brother is a dog fanactic, and he makes and sells his own homemade dog treats. He makes every batch by hand. His dogs are his babies, and he was tired of feeding them junk food. http://mrgamblesdogbites.com/

Made Peanut Butter and Pumpkin dog treats today. My dog gives 2 Paws Up! She kept walking around where I had been standing to see if I had dropped one after I gave her a treat! :bigsmile:
Here's the recipe:
* 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
* 2 eggs
* 1/2 cup canned pumpkin (I used 1 heaping cup and then didn't need any water)
* 2 tablespoons peanut butter
* 1/2 teaspoon salt ( I skipped this as the dog doesn't care or need it)
* 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or spray with non-stick cooking spray.
2. Mix together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff. Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick roll. Cut into 1/2-inch pieces.
3. Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes.
Notes:
I found that they were done in about 25 minutes. The size of treat makes a difference to cooking time, so check on your treats if you've rolled them out and used cookie cutters or have made smaller treats for smaller dogs or chubby dogs.
I turn the oven off at the end of cooking time and leave the treats in the oven for another hour to get them dryer and harder.
As always, remember that homemade dog treats do not have any preservatives, so freeze what you can't use up in 2 weeks time. Remove from freezer as needed.
