Shock! Veggies make you weigh more!

I weigh myself every day, because I like graphs and seeing patterns. It's just data and I don't get wrapped around the axle about it :) Patterns do emerge though.

So, what I am about to write will be obvious to some and not to others. The other day I found a lot of veg going cheap and bought the bargain. The veg were low carbohydrate, asparagus, courgettes (zuchinni), brocolli, mushrooms, onions. I ate these over 2 days with chicken also bargain, but did not include hi calorie fat or carbohydrate food. So I had a large calorie balance and stuffed myself on veg to make them up.

I then noticed for a couple of days my weight went up for a few days. It didn't take long for the penny to drop. I was still carying low calorie but high weight food inside me. Back to my normal regime and the body weight is on its way back down.

So if you are a daily weigher, don't be surprised if you see a weight variation of the wrong sort if you do something "healthy" like eat a lot of lo calorie veg.

I know I just "stated the obvious", but sometimes the obvious isn't.

I eat huge amounts of fibrous veggies too - broccoli and lots of greens, mixed in with carrots and sweet potato, they weigh HEAVY plus add 12-14+ water daily and my weight is HIGH... but once it's "out".. sudden drops are always expected! :)

    Oh for goodness sake.

Fibrous veg just take a long time to digest so what you weigh is nothing other than the volume of food in your digestive tract that's all.

Can we please stop the scare mongering about healthy foods here?

Can I just point out that this post is not intended as scare mongering. It was merely to illustrate how changing the way you normally eat can make an immediate and possibly unexpected change to the number that shows on the scales.

I have read post where people daily weigh and then panic if their weight has gone up when they have been "good". Some spend so much time looking at calories and forget that what they eat has mass itself.

As R4z0r4Mm0 pointed out once it is out it is out!
  • I did not get the impression the intention is to scaremonger... quite the opposite, he's pointing out that eating veggies may not give he result on the scales you expect. Information I appreciate because if I have steak or chicken I tend to have just veg with it, no masterplan, I just find it filling enough I skip the carbs (or have a nominal amount). Anyone out there thinking lots of veggies = weight on will now be aware that lots of veggies = weight awaiting dumping!

I must admit that I've noticed this too but without following it to the 'obvious' conclusion, so thanks for pointing it out to me. I'm just in the middle of making a batch of all veg soup due to late night shopping yesterday and lots of bargain veg so I'm looking foward to the erm... end results IFYSWIM. Sorry.

I eat tons of veg every day, in fact I don't eat fruit (or very little of it) and I lose weight every week. I understand what you are saying that they are bulky but I think there is an obsession for people to weigh themselves every day and I don't really understand why.

This site aims for you to lose 1-2 pounds a week, it is a lifestyle change not a crash diet.

The reality is that if you consume anything there is going to be a weight gain (temporarily) until it is out of your system but this weight should be negligable. Surely you need to allow yourself to eat?

We can not survive on dust!

I would rather see people eating veg and lots of it than reaching for empty foods because 'Shock! Veggies make you weigh more!'

Eating bulky foods can make you weigh more at first. When your body gets used to them, that's not the case. I like my veggies because I can eat more and feel full longer. It didn't keep me from losing weight in the long run.

I never realized that. I didn't think it was to scare us into not eating veggies, but rather to encourage us that if we are weighing in at a time when we have had tons of fibrous veggies, that could explain a higher number on the scale (and we haven't really gained weight or not reduced the fat). Thinking back, this explains a few weigh-ins...Thanks!

Well then better advice is to tell them to weigh in the morning before they eat and after morning constitutions so they have the correct weight. Or just let them panic and figure it out one day themselves. Cuz people are gonna get their neurotic on no matter what you say. lmbo.
