Swimming workouts

So, i'm trying to change up my workout a little just to keep my body on its tippie toes!
Anyone have any suggestions of how many lengths you should do for it to be at all effective.
All i have set in stone is that I shall tread water for 5 minutes 3 times during my workout...but other than that, swimming is not my strength, suggestions please?
