Anyone using the Hacker Diet or at least their exercise plan? I find it a great way to start exercising for us "techies" who are not very active and on a computer most of the day. I am up to ladder level 4. This is the second time I start this program. I made it up to level 19 before I stopped last time. I need to keep going up to my goal of rung 24 and stay there. This is a great way for 15 minutes of exercise every day.

I've been away for a while and need to start this again to build muscle. Currently I only walk. Walking works but muscle burns more calories! Anyone out there using the Hacker Diet and Ladder exercises?
  • I just started the hacker's diet today. One thing i am trying to figure out though. How do you track the exercise in my fitness pal? I am only on rung 1 right now but I imagine that when I get higher those rungs will have a significant calorie burn.

I know that as part of the diet you are not supposed to really be counting the exercise burn and are supposed to use your trend line. But i am and always will be a number guy.

Just as a point of data, I used the Hacker Diet about 14 years ago. I lost weight, and learning how to calculate a weighted moving average was invaluable. But long term, I think it did more harm than good - I lost as much muscle as I did fat and didn't really form any good eating habits. I ate too little, all carbs, went into super-metabolic-conservation mode, and gained it all back (with some extra pounds for company). So I think it's a good starting point but there's more to know than that.

The ladder thing, though, that's a great way to start getting in shape. I wouldn't worry about how many calories it burns, the answer is "not really that many, but that's not why you're doing it." As long as you're consistent, the trend line will tell you what your TDEE is, it doesn't really matter where you burned each individual calorie.
