I was browsing the New York Times website just now, and they posted an article today about the HCG diet and how it has fans and skeptics: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/08/nyregion/08hcg.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&hpw

The first time I heard about HCG for weight loss was on MFP, and I know that there are quite a few people who follow it. To be honest, I'm rather skeptical because it doesn't seem to be sustainable and it's a quick fix. To me, it would be preferable to stick with nutrition and exercise habits that one can sustain in the long run. So I'm curious to know, what were your reasons for trying it out? Or for those who haven't tried it, why not?

I wouldn't try it because it is not a lifestyle change. It is impossible to maintain 500 calories for the rest of your life. I do not want my menu to be limited to 11 different foods. I don't want to have side effects to something that can't be gauranteed to be safe in the long run. My girlfriend was on it (the injections) she lost 61lbs but she looks terrible and now she is sick all the time like puking and light headed and dizzy.
I just dont think it is worth it. I was 254lbs...I am now 165.... try to tell me that watching what you put in your mouth and what you burn doesnt add up. I think a lot of these are "get rich" quick schemes for a lot of people. It is funny how it came out in 1976 and was reintroduced during the recession. makes me wonder.

kaitlin, here's more info on the HCG diet: http://hcgdietinfo.com/HCG-Weight-Loss-FAQ.htm. on the other side, here's a site that discourages it: http://www.dietsinreview.com/diet_column/07/hcg-diet-look-elsewhere-for-weight-loss/

basically, it's an injection of a pregnancy hormone that diverts fat away from cells and into the bloodstream, because the body believes there's a fetus for the fat to nourish. people also need to keep caloric intake under 500.

People will really go to some astonishing lengths to avoid exercise.
