How many more calories should one take in while pregnant/breastfeeding?

I've heard that nutritional needs are basically the same for the first six months, and only go up by 200-300 calories a day for the third trimester. Is that right? Basically, maintenance, then gaining half a pound a week?

How about while breastfeeding? Estimates differ widely.

I'm curious, not actually expecting/trying. If I were, I'd ask my doctor. I'm just interested in an overview. It seems like it would be really easy to use pregnancy as an excuse to eat really badly.

You really don't need to change anything, your body will let you know when it wants more....but seriously don't worry about too much....just eat healthy, try not to eat out so much and sweat! I gained 50 plus with my 3 girls and i'm going to be trying again in about 3 months or so and plan on using this site to keep me in check....i know i wouldn't have gained so much if i kept track of what i was eating! Your thinking on the right track!!
