ok so I got a HRm and used it for the first time tonight at the gym. Well I was curious to see the difference between the HRM and the machine since I have heard that the machine is usually way over right? Well the machine said I burned 420 in 30 min and my HRM which I programed for my body says I burned 709. Um why the big difference and should the HRM not be less than what the machine says since the machine is always wrong? Please let me know cause I have no idea what to put in for the day.

the machine is just an estimate whereas the HRM is actually more exact b/c it's actually measurin ur heart rate throught the workout. the machine only does a spot check & an estimate of what ur heart rate is based on the spot check. the HRM is WAY more accurate b/c the machine can't tell how hard u're really workin throughout the actual workout

    hope this helps

709 calories burned in 30 minutes? That seems a bit high. Does your hrm have a chest strap? If it doesn't I would not use the hrm results.....just my opinion.

If your HRM has a chest strap then go with that number burned. If not I would average the 2 numbers and then subtract some.

i'd check the settings on your HRM b/c 700 in 30 minutes seems way too high.

I do have a chest strap. When I plug it into mfp and use their numbers it is like 630 or something llike that so I am really not sure what to do.

oh yeah and I am about 115 lbs over weight so I also thought that the bigger you are than the more you burn right?

Since you're using a chest strap with your HRM, trust your HRM. The machines are almost never right. For instance, I biked for 45 mins tonight, the bike said I burned 285, HRM said 510. Please note, the bike asked for NO information about me (i.e., weight, height, age, resting heart rate, etc.). I double checked with my trainer due to the large discrepency, and he said the HRM is right since it has all that info plugged in already.

The numbers on MFP are an estimate. They don't know the intensity of your workout. And yes, we larger folk will burn more cals just to propel ourselves.
  • The only time I ever get odd things from my HRM is when I have the watch right near my laptop. Then the heart rate goes right up. While working out you're unlikely to be near anything like that for an extended period, so you should be able to count on it. Yes, if you weigh more to start with then you burn more, so your numbers are likely to be higher for that length of time than someone smaller would be.

Now that you said you are 115 lbs overweight I believe you HRM is definitely correct! It sounds pretty dead on for someone 115lbs overweight. Use that it is right.

If you have a chest strap, then that is GREAT! I would check it out for a week and see what it tells you. For being 115lbs over weight that seems normal. For instance, I only burn 300 something doing P90X Cardio X, but a guy who is heavier and has more weight to lose, burned over 600 calories. SOoooo, I think that # sounds about right. BUT keep a watch on it. I personally would do the same workout all week to find out what you are burning!

Yeah, the 709 in 30mn is really high. You are likely to burn this much in an hour or so. I found the opposite that the machines reported a higher calorie burn than the heart rate monitor.

trust the HRM. It is the most accurate representation of what your heart is doing through the workout. I think that for being 115 pounds overweight that the calorie burn you noted would be about rught.
