Jogging vs. Brisk Walking

Hi everyone! Quick question. I started walking in my local park (in which the track is a mile) recently. I alternate brisk walking and jogging every quarter mile. Someone told me that if I'm doing this to lose weight, that I should stop because it will not help. They said that I need to keep myself at a steady speed to lose weight so in that case I would have to walk briskly at a constant pace the entire time or jog at a constant pace instead, no alternating. Is this true?
