RMR vs. MFP?

Has anyone had their RMR tested? If so, how close was it to what MFP said? I'm contemplating getting mine done, but I don't really have the money to spend on it. I was just curious who's gotten it done and what it was compared to MFP. I'm 5'7 and just under 170lbs right now, 22, female. According to MFP, in order to lose 1.5lbs/week I should be neting 1350 cals. I'd just hate to spend so much time working at this for no results. Thoughts, suggestions?

I know that I was eating at my 1200 and not losing weight at all. I bumped my calories up to 1400 and now I am losing weight, I never got my RMR tested but if my survival calories are around 1400 then I don't know why I would ever choose to eat below that. It worked for me.
Give it a try, it took me a week to see if it was working. so its relatively harmless to test.0 -

RMR will not tell you how much to eat to lose, you will have to add an amount to your tested RMR to get your maintenance, then have a deficit from maintenance to lose. You will lose weight just eating BMR/RMR caloires.0 -

I had mine tested about 2 years ago and mine was actually about 1.5% lower than the average but I am considering having it done again because I'm in much better shape now so my RMR is probably higher.
Since MFP uses averages to calculate RMR and the additional calculations of calories burned in activities to get a deficit, you can't base whether you should have your's tested based on others experiences. I recommend it because it was eye opening for me. I thought my metabolism would be higher than the average when I did it.0 -

Just my opinion, but from your info, a goal of 1.5 lbs/week may be too high for your current situation. Typically, with about 40-45 lbs to lose, you want to be at about 1 lb per week loss. Choosing too high of a loss goal tends to backfire. MFP's BMR calculator is fairly accurate for most people - but is still only an estimate. But it's generally good enough to get your plan going.

I don't think you understand what that site is calculating for you. It calculates your BMR, MFP uses your BMR and adds an activity amount to it to get maintenance then lowers your caloric intake based on your weekly weight loss goal. To get the number that MFP bases your caloric intake on go to tools, BMI calculator.

No based on what I see there you start with you BMR and then the Harris Benedict Equations are to get your daily maintenance calories. BTW, mine come out significantly higher as well, but you have to remember it is still just an estimate based on an estimate of you BMR. If the BMR estimate they do there is incorrect then the maintenance calories from the Harris Benedict equations will be wrong as well. The other problem here is that as far as I know neither MFP or this other site take your body fat percentage (and thus how much lean mass you have) into account. That also would change the numbers, at times significantly.0 -
Just got mine tested yesterday at Life Time Fitness (It's called the CaloriePoint test in their Life Lab area) and it let me know that I am NEVER allowed to eat under 1127 (which is a low metabolism pretty much) and I was doing this to stay under my 1200 goal...also with my lifestyle added in i got 1465 caloric intake... so plus what i burned working out (eg 300) =1765 minus 250 (1/2 lb a week was the safest in my levels) you get 1515 minimum if i burned 300 doing exercise. this is WAY higher than I've been eating... I suggest to get it done. At Life Time (which might not be in your area) it was $99.95 for members+39.00 for the mask... i work there so i got a discount but its worth it! They also do CardioPoint which lets you know your Base HR and your threshold and Max HR and gives you exercises to bump up your base HR to stay in the Fat burning zone longer. (going over your base range into threshold only burns sugar/carbs which does NOT help me ) GOOD LUCK!0

Fat burning zone is kind of a myth, you burn a higher % of calories from fat at that rate but less calories in total and less calories from fat than if you workout in a higher zone. You will always burn more by pushing harder. Say you are in the zone for 20 min and burn 150 caloires 60% from fat that is 90 cals from fat, if you workout in the higher zone you may burn 220 cals 45% from fat for 99 calories from fat. You will lose weight faster and with shorter workouts working out at higher intensity.0 -

Your welcome! I bumped mine up to my BMR because I was eating at the 1200 my BMR is 1400 so I bumped it up and have seen great results from it!0
