OK I joined MFP in January and since joining I have been watching my calories and going to the gym 3-5 times a week mainly walking some jogging. Right now I am just trying to lose weight and to be honest I'm getting bored with walking the track and it gets kind of crowded at night.

What I'm looking for is other things to do to burn calories that I might enjoy and I need to add one thing I have a bad knee, torn meniscus cartilage, that i had surgery on 4 years ago. Some nights my knee bothers me if I try to jog too much, those nights I cut back on jogging and try to walk a faster pace.

The gym I go to has cardio machines and I've used them before and I know they are better on joints but there are not that many machines and usually a line to use them.

I've been looking at some DVD's but there are so many to chose from and I don't know where to begin.

I see a lot of people talk about Jillian Michael's DVDs and I saw on Amazon she had one that was tailored to burn calories and lose fat, I'm going to show my ignorance here, are these good for men too?? They seem to be tailored more towards women.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Do they offer classes at your gym? I LOVE taking classes. I do zumba, yoga body pump and kickboxing. Some of the classes get your heart rate soaring and the time flies by. =)

Can you swim? Great all-over exercise and less pressure on the knee.

I agree with trying out classes. If your gym doesn't have them, perhaps look at different gyms. If your gym has a pool, start swimming laps. Also, have you thought about weight training?
  • There's a video called Insanity that is hardcore. There may be some of the exercises on the video you have to pass because of your knee, but you can just jog in place or walk in place and it will still keep your heart rate up to burn calories.

I am all about spin classes. if you gym doesn't have one, definitely switch! I lost 70 lbs in 7 months doing 2 spin classes a week.

I second this. Classes help you because everyone in them is at a different level. They are as challenging or easy as you make them. I love the comradery of classes, and I also like to have someone to push me. I take Spin classes (and I love them. I'm a junkie), but I am going to my first Zumba class this Friday. You should look into classes.

As far as DVDs go, I hate Jillian Micheals videos. I don't liked to be yelled at by my TV! I don't think that they are geared more towards women, but I see why you might be concerned. I like Tony Horton (Power 90 and P90X) videos. He motivates without fear! :) Good luck on your journey!

I cannot believe I had not even thought of classes and it was right there in front of me.

I'm a member at the local YMCA and they have many classes and I def want to take a sping class.

Jillian Michaels does seem to yell a lot and I don't want my TV to yell at me.

The Y does have weight training but like the cardio machines it's alway crowded and lines to get on the machines. I guess I need to be more patient with this area in the gym.

    Thanks everyone

    Another question I left off.

Would hiring a trainer be beneficial at this point??

I always thought a trainer would be used more for when you really want to step up your exercise routine or toning.

Hey man I just joined here because to track my calories but being bored at work I have found myself browsing the forums.

P90X is pretty tough but it is actually a pretty good program. I was skeptical at first until I gave it a try. I didn't complete it bc it didnt fit my goals. Also just bc there are women on the DVD's/programs doesn't mean its for women. Women and men need to train the same way.

I do now know how much you weigh or your fitness levels. I know riding a bike is easy on the knees. I torm my MCL and the Athletic Trainer had me on a bike all off season. Walmart actually sales some good bikes now for a little over $100. It will get you out in the town riding and enjoying things. Just my 2 cents worth.

You don't need to hire a trainer you can learn everything you need to know all on your own. FYI most personal training certifications can be completed in a weekend where they prep you for the test and then give you a test with rudimentary questions.

If you feel like you must have a trainer look for someone with ACSM or NASM certifications. The AFAA certifications that they Y pushes are a joke.

If you need specific help hit me up on a private message.

    Good luck.
