I am going to install the ubuntu computer operating system on my laptop and was wondering if any of you have tried it and if so how has it worked out. It was recommended to me by a friend who raves about it but I wanted some other opinions.

Sure, I use it all the time. It's Linux though, if you're not familiar with linux, it's quite a change from windows in many respects. It's faster, less bugs, more free programs, more powerful, and a much better community of users, but there's not a lot of commercial software out there for it (but the OpenSource community is huge for it).

I'd suggest, before going with ubuntu, get a bootable liveCD first, they are also Linux. That way you can boot into linux from your laptop without ever uninstalling or changing your existing operating system.

    go here for the liveCD

I used to dual-boot my laptop with ubuntu. However my wife's laptop quit charging so I had to remove it for her to be able to work on my laptop.

Listen to SHBoss, he knows of what he speaks. Try a LiveCD first.
