More Reps or more weight?????

I've been working out at the gym 5 days a week for the past 6 weeks, and doing the 30 day shred when I get home for about 11 days so far)

I can do much more weight on leg machines than I can on arm, but the one thing I'm confused about is, should I strive to add weight to each machine or just adding reps?

Currently, when I get to about 2 sets of 10 on a machine, and it gets to the point that I can do it with minimal discomfort, I increase the weight 10 lbs. Then when I get up to 20-25 I increase the weight again.

Should I be increasing the weight or should I just keep increasing the number of reps I do and keep it at a lower weight. Which is better for toning?

I do the exercise bike & 30 day shred for cardio/calorie burn, but I know weights build muscle. I'm just not sure if I need to keep going up in weight or not.

  • your not gonna grow into massive muscle mountain unless you are doing weights so big you can only manage about 5 reps at a time.. if in doubt , just do more at lighter weight . and concentrate on controlling the movement really slowly to get a better workout

Toning is a weird word women have used incorrect for years. muscles doesn't tone! it builds, they grow stronge. why do women say tone because some how we thought if we lifted to heavy we would lot like professional body builder!s not ever going to happen! unless you train like a professional body builder (and who has time for that) so to answer your ? lift more but go up slow 5lbs or 2.5lbs at time not 10
when you can do 12 to 16 reps 2 sets easy, increase again. You will be amazed at how small your body will look when you build muscle and I promise you will never look like you have to much muscle. Good Luck

Remember, the most important factor is form. Lowering your BF% is the only real way to tone.

Increasing reps will increase your endurance, while increasing weight will add to your strength.

So what ever you choose to do will totally depend on your goals.
