So I'm a college student & I have a lot of friends who have pretty bad eating habits -- like I'm pretty sure they don't know what vegetables are or that the salad bar even exists. They chug sodas & eat greasy foods almost all the time, which got me thinking- how does your body survive like this? I mean obviously they are not receiving adequate nutrients from their food- how does your body compensate for this?!

It doesn't you get sick, gain weight and possibly malnourishment.

Generally you wind up eating more (usually of the non-nutritious food) to try and compensate for the lack of nutrients, and your body stores the excess calories and bad stuff in fat.

Eventually, it WILL catch up with you. We don't have a 30% obesity rate for nothing...

Not sure where you are from but from my understanding the US has about 60% overweight population, I guess 30% of those are in the obese category. Up here in Canada I think we have about 50% overweight population. These numbers should be below 20%.

When youre younger (oh man I cant believe I said that) youre metabolism is faster and on your side. Most young people can eat whatever they want without exercise and there be no consequences, that they can see. But what its doing to the inside of your body is building plaque and clogging their arteries, slowing their metabolism, affecting their heart, lungs, muscles, and yes they will get sick as well as establish very unhealthy lifestyle habits that will become very hard to change thus leading to diabetes and heart disease and the health crisis our country is in now. Therefore, I would recommend you being a strong roll model for your friends, someone might be watching and someone might change their lifestyle and its contagious, they do it, someone watching them does it, families and lives can be changed for the better forever!!!! Ok Im off my soapbox. Good for you for making healthy choices, your parents probably taught you the importance of this, bravo to them and keep up the great work! It will pay off later in life:)
  • Take it from an ex competitive swimmer .... keep eating like crap and you'll forget how great you used to look.

Lead by example. It won't be long before you're the only one of your friends looking good in their bridal dress.

This is part of my motivation for getting healthy. I'm only 19 but I'm sure most of my friends will be getting engaged and married in the next ten years. I do NOT want to be the fat bridesmaid (or fat bride for that matter) that has to stand next to other super skinny girls and have those pictures go in my friends' wedding albums forever!
I also agree that you should just lead by example. You can't make your friends change; you can warn them about what they are doing to their bodies, but you don't want to be the health harpie.

The human body is a pretty amazing thing. It can take a lot before something really bad happens. I mean people like Keith Richards and Charlie Sheen are still alive! The fact is, it WILL catch up sooner or later and being old with a ton of health problems is not something I want to deal with
