Anyone had a serious injury in the past?

I broke my back 6 years ago now. Actually, I shattered T12. I am super lucky that my surgery was successful and I can walk and do pretty much anything I want with few restrictions. From time to time I still am very fearful of something going wrong and re-injuring myself. I'm not sure how rational or irrational that is. So exercise can be stressful and worrisome from time to time and I'm afraid to really push myself. I'm just curous if there's anyone else out there with the same or similar fear and if so, were you able to overcome that fear or is it always just there? Thanks

Wow...you are incredibly lucky and I'm so glad you have your health back
Can you book to see a physiotherapist and ask them to monitor you as you progress through different levels of fitness? Having a professional next to you to advise will help get your confidence back up and encourage you to begin fitness regimes on your own.
All the best with this and let us know how you get on.

I'm really sorry I can't be more helpful, cause I've never been in that situation. But I do really think maybe you should see a physical therapist or somebody qualified to check your body's reaction to various types of exercises, and give you a more detailed list of do's, and don'ts, and work-on's. You've come so far, keep pushing!0

I had ACL surgery on my right knee as a teenager, and broke my left kneecap last summer. Needless to say, lower body workouts can be challenging.
I'm not sure if this would work for back injuries (maybe check with the physiotherapist someone else suggested), is I do my workouts in front of a mirror (a cheap door mirror that I can move around and lean in different spots) to visually verify that I don't over/under extend or apply lateral pressure on my knees.
I do know that my mom, who broke her back in her 30s, has great success with yoga. She takes a class with a good instructor who makes sure she's in the right positions, uses props if necessary, and such.0 -
My injury wasn't as severe as yours, but I understand the fear.
I had a 95% tear of my left MCL in July of 2009. The MCL is the one they DON'T fix with surgery. 18 weeks in a hinged knee brace, two months of PT, and a warning to wear a brace for all strenuous and contact activities.
I play soccer, volleyball, softball, hike, backpack, rock climb, snow and water ski. Yeah, I get the fear. I do still wear the brace for those activities, but not for running or training. It hurts every once in awile, but I've just decided that I can't stop living and doing on the thought that I 'might' get hurt again.
If I do get hurt, I'll start the process all over again, and keep trying. I won't say that sometimes I don't check myself when I'm doing things, but I just refuse to let it stop me.
Hope it at least helps to know others have the same fears...0 -
I had only a very minor injury (stress fracture in my lower back) which will probably never heal. I see a physio once a month & she checks my range of motions & gets me to do a few things & then she tellls me if I can push a bit harder for the next month or if I need to back off for a bit etc. Its made a significant difference to my level of fear having someone able to assess how my back is faring each month. I highly recommend it!0
