Overexcercising?

I know that it is important to rotate working out different muscle groups as well as to rotate strength training and cardio. What I'm not sure of is...how long is too long in one day? Or does length of time in one day even matter. For instance...today I did Jillian Michaels "No More Trouble Zones" and 10 minutes later did her "Banish Fat Boost Metabolism". I wanted to burn a ton of calories knowing I would be eating dinner with the hubby at a calorie laden restaurant. I managed to hack my way through both without dying and my first thought was...If I did it today...I could do it more often. Thoughts anyone?

I have read in a few credible places that doing over an hour of cardio at one time is a waste of time because you eventually start burning more muscle than you are fat.0

I'd buy that...One of the videos is strength training and one is cardio...will that have a bearing?0 -

I think that would be ok....I have always been told to do the strength training first so that you use up all your glycogen stores then when you get to the cardio you are burning fat I have had my best results by doing 30 min cardio early in day then at night i do 45 min strength training followed by 30 more minutes cardio. Good luck finding your balance!!!!0 -

A waste of time in terms of plain fat loss perhaps, but some people actually like to get fit... have some endurance...??? I mean it's not about appearance for some people is it.0 -
No worries if you eat back your exercise calories. It's better to exercise and to eat than to not do either.
If you have energy, go for it. Rest when your body tells you to.0 -

Yes good point, I was reading into the OP's post as more of a fat loss thing but there are benefits to doing more. I never said I wasn't in this for fitness. I workout about 2.5 hrs a day but I split it up because that's what works best for me. It's all about your goals and what works best for you, right?0 -
Absolutely agree. :flowerforyou:
I kind of think it's sad when people only look at exercise only as a means to an end to a smaller butt. It's such a great feeling when you get fit and gain endurance and you feel you can do something for hours! :bigsmile:0 -

I will admit in the very beginning I was in it for the smaller butt but once I started feeling better and getting stronger, gaining more confidence essentially feeling sexier. I forgot about the butt and became hooked on the feeling of being fit! I still have 50 lbs to go till my goal but knowing that I can do some hard core kick boxing for 2 hours straight is worth way more to me than a pair of size 4 jeans!! :laugh:0 -
Thank you for the posts!! I am finding it amazing the amount of endurance I have gained. I ran for the first time yesterday since October and was able to hit 3 miles in 30 minutes(an NSV for me). This is a huge improvement and I have to credit it to the strength training and cardio videos I have been doing during the winter months! I love MFP and its peeps!0

ohhh..and beside the health benifits...I totally love that I went from a 14 to a 6....I am positive that I will be in a size 4 in no time. This is the best site ever for encouragement and great advice!0
