Riddle me this----inches not weight

Ok, so I measured today, even though it's only been 5 days since I last measured, because I have not lost so much as an ounce in 9 days.
So, anyway--it seems that in 1 week I have
---lost 2" off my upper stomach (above the belly button)
--lost 1.5" off my hip area
--gained 1/2" on my thigh
---gained 1" on my calf
Now--I know the gain is muscle, from riding my bike so much--I doubt it has come from the few weight training trips I've had so far--could it?
I didn't expect to gain inches though from muscle build-up but had hoped to lose inches and tone as well? Even though I am really liking how my calf is looking--the muscles are starting to show good definition. The thigh still has too much fat to show muscle but I can feel it when I tense it and when I'm riding--so I know the muscle is building up there, too.
BUT--how in the heck can I lost 3.5" from my torso area and yet not lose not even an ounce??????????? How is that possible???

Stuff is moving around and being toned up! You need to tape more of your leg, because you will see how it's tightening up in some parts, getting smaller, and toned in other areas, getting bigger. Plus I think your muscles need more water, so if your muscles are increasing, you might just be absorbing more water into them, thus the no weight loss, especially if you are a hard core biker.
Right now I am in my stage one of weight loss and right now I am fighting the urge to indulge in a large bowl of ice cream or a bag of doritios! I am trying to eat this pudding like it's suppose to last a week!
I can do this! And so can you! Be thankful that you have those gams and that they are working hard for y ou!0 -

Not to get totally sidetracked by main topic, but I was.
I am restarting and am in this 1st phase too. Walk away from the doritos and LARGE bowl of ice cream. Remember typically it's 1/2 cup for a serving. It's all about quantity in this game.
Back on topic....muscles do need water and things will be shifting and tightening up all over so don't freak so much about gains.

That's a significant amount of muscle gain in your legs and particularly given that muscle is so much more dense than fat, the inches you've gained in muscle more than "make up for" the inches you've lost in fat. Good for you!! Just think of the fat burning power of your new, muscular legs!! :drinker:0

I was shocked to see I had gained an 1' on my calf--I'm wondering if if some of it might be fluid? But, like I said, the calf is showing some great definition, particularly when I flex it. It's like a "gun show" !!0

That's fabulous muscle development but you are really earning it!!! SO great  :happy:0 -
Soooooo glad you measured! Hope that takes the edge off yesterday's frustration from the scale! What you now know, for sure, is that your commitment to exercise and nutrition is paying off with changes in your body. The scale is one measure of that change but inches are another.
I think, like everything connected with our bodies, true changes happen over time. I've certainly been foiled by being frustrated about the differences one day makes (like menstrual bloating; a touch of constipation; some extra salt in my food). So, now i'm trying to stay focused on changes each week. But I can already tell I should really be looking at month-to-month. I have always wanted instant gratification in the past; now I'm trying to stay committed to lasting changes that stand the test of time.
So, let time be your ally and wait to see the final verdict. What you're doing sounds like it's working -- keep on keepin' on!!!!0
