first, because you are not burning off what you consume, it is just turning to fat...
second, because it is very bad for you to lay down after eating, the acid from your stomach reaching your esophogus can cause reflux. my husband just had surgery for this recently. even laying back in a recliner after dinner is bad for your insides.0 -
Well............... (All references to THEY means science.)
It turns out that this is a myth..
:grumble:
Which kinda makes me mad because for years they told us that it was a BAD thing to eat before bed because you would not burn those calories because I GUESS they where thinking that your body shuts down when you sleep.
Well it turns out that they where WRONG (OPPS SILLY US MY BAD!)
That your body burns calories just as much through the night as you do sitting at your desk all day at work.
Which MIGHT explain why you sometimes feel hungry when you wake up.
In fact they have ALSO have found out that sleep is GOOD for your diet because it helps to increase that wonderful metabolism burning thing in our bodies that makes us burn fat. The SAME thing that burns fat when we work out. (BTW, a BIG HUGE DUH HERE... It turns out that if you worked out that day that your metabolism is better as you sleep and burns more calories during sleep then those day that you did not work out.)
The ONLY thing that THEY have not proven a MYTH about eating before bed is indigestion. Which they BETTER not call a myth because I happen to KNOW that at the very least THAT is true!
So if you eat past a certain time at night do not freat about those bedtime calories. as long as you are still in your calories for the day, then you are good.

Well again be careful on WHAT you eat before bed, Because like PMkelly said If you have not digested enough of your food you CAN get indigestion like me or worse like her hubby.
But DIET wise it is not an issue.

I've found that if I eat after 8ish PM - I lose weight more slowly. I understand the calories in and calories out...I think it is more of a total calories intake, however even when I've moved my dinner to a later time and kept calories the same - weight comes off slower (I know this because I'm an OCD scale freak  and weigh myself every morning - so I know what works and what doesn't.)
Other things I learned - for instance, popcorn (even the low fat/fat free micro) doesn't help my weight loss. I'm not sure if it is the lack of substance or sodium content - but I had to cut that out of my regular diet. The body is a weird, complicated thing sometimes :happy:0 -
I'm not a "dinner" eater...in fact...it's a job for me TO EAT. I'll eat kellogs cereal at night and will even replace it as a real meal.....but my problem is the dang snacks. The chips and diet coke. The chips my not be many...but way over my left over calories for sure!0
