A good breakfast! This has got to be the OLDEST advice out there as far as nutrition goes, and it's advice that I've always followed. But I learned something today.

Usually I have what I consider to be a decent breakfast. Some cottage cheese and fruit (although watch sodium intake for the rest of the day!!) or some oatmeal with maybe a few blueberries mixed in.

Yesterday after a particularly wonderful bike ride I had a big surplus of calories and it made me realize that I'm doing well getting good work outs in and usually have left over cals. Today, knowing I was teaching stroller fitness this morning, I decided to be proactive and have a higher calorie breakfast. I had a cup of cherries (about 8 cherries or so) on the side. AND, I had a packet of organic, low sodium low sugar oat meal into which I stirred 1 tbsp of natural peanut butter (just roasted nuts, nothing else) and 1 small banana, sliced. It was about 400 calories. It was the TASTIEST breakfast I've ever had. AND, it held me over for hours. I was amazed to look at the clock and see that it was almost 1 and I was only just starting to feel faintly hungry. For lunch I spread home made basil hummus on 2 romaine leaves and rolled a couple of fresh veggies inside but I'm topped up! lol I can't believe the difference that a "big" breakfast makes. I was always worried about "wasting" too many calories early in the day but clearly it's true that not only a breakfast but a hearty breakfast sets you up for the day.

Give it a try!!!

    I can not STAND Cottage cheese, but there is a VERY good reason for me to not like it. Which I will not regale you all with because it is a decent food I hear.
and I do not want you all to have the thought in YOUR heads as to why cottage cheese even the THOUGHT makes me want to hurl. at one point it was so bad that I could not even go to that section of the store without my gag reflex starting in.   Trying to tell the ladies that worried about my health as I am standing there turning green, that I really WAS fine, it was just the thought of Cottage cheese.:blushing:
That said though I LOVE to go the big breakfasts,  Fruit and oatmeal is my FAVORITE!!!!!  YUMMMO!!!
I also do a pretty decent egg and veggie scramble.
You are SO right that it takes you FAR in your day.
Our Grandmother knew what they where TALKING about!

Breakfast is my absolute favorite meal of the day! I love oatmeal with fruit... but I'm definitely trying the natural peanut butter idea... YUM!

One of my favorite breakfasts includes one Kashi Go Lean Waffle with 1/4 c. Trader Joe's frozen wild blueberries (slightly thawed) and 1/4 c. fresh strawberries on top and drizzled with a little sugar free maple syrup... and one Morningstar veggie sausage patty. So good and so filling! I'd much rather eat a big breakfast and a lighter lunch.

GOT A SILLY QUESTION - WHAT IS HUMMAS??

Not a silly question and OH MY LORD, you need to make some. Hummus is a fabulous dip or spread and popular all over the world. To make (my way anyway  ):

1 can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
    1-2 cloves of garlic
    1 tbsp lemon juice
    1 tbsp water
    1 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp tahini (sesame paste, usually located in the same aisle as peanut butter. Check the top shelf)

In a food processor, chop up the garlic. Add all other ingredients in and blend on a high setting until smooth. Taste, and add more lemon or oil or water as you see fit! DONE! Great on sandwiches, as a veggie dip, on a spoon! lol...

And these days I have been experimenting with different herbs. I've added a cup of fresh basil leaves for a very fresh tasting basil hummus. Cilantro is also brilliant.
You can puree in roasted red pepper or black beans or avocado... you can add plain yogurt if you like...

Many stores sell pre-made hummus but it is NEVER as good as home made and this is the easiest (SUPER healthy) dip. We literally always have hummus on hand. I make a fresh batch every couple of days.
