i have fasted in the past (religious reasons)...

depends on the type of fast but mine were very strict...only boiled water allowed through out the day... (again religious reasons).

if you do want to fast...the best is one to plan ahead and clean your kitchen before. This way you have no real reason to enter your kitchen. Next, don't think about it and take in water. Plan on watching a ton of movies or reading or something that takes your mind off of eating. Also don't binge the night before....it isn't going to be your last meal ever...so no point.

Once you are done with the fast, easy yourself into food...start off bland and work your way up. You don't want to get sick.

I have done 3 day fasts and 5 day fasts... both are hard but can be done.

I do a fast 1 day a month. For 24 hours (or 2 meals) I don't eat or drink anything. It's more for religious purposes than anything but to get through I do a lot of meditation (prayer) and activities to keep me busy and my mind off the fact that my body is hungry.

Visit the ‘East Stop Eat’ thread here on MFP. The benefits of intermittent fasting, how people are doing it and reviews about the book.

Thats so funny!!! I have fasted some. i usually fast for 18-24 hours. Basically from dinner to dinner. I mainly did it because it helped my gallbladder symptoms. I wasn't trying to lose weight at that time, so I don't know what it did for my weight. I would fast 2x week. I haven't for awhile, though.

Nope. Don't really see a point.

I'm here to change the way I eat...not to stop eating, or eliminate one particular thing from my diet. If there is anything that I have stopped eating, it's junk food. Eliminating only fats, or carbs, or sugar, etc...that isn't for me, because I will never be able to sustain that for the rest of my life.

Eating better? I can do that forever.

a fast is a great way to break food addictions. there are several difference types:

a 24 hour water fast (no food or drink, only water)
a liquid fast (where you are allowed to drink up to half your normal calories)
eat, stop, eat fast (supper to supper)
abstaining from a specific food for a specific period (such as lent)

    and probably more.

I fast once or twice a week from about 2pm one day until 2pm the next day. The first one or two were hard, but now I actually don't mind it at all. One interesting thing that happens is that I "empty out" (sorry if that's TMI) really well towards the end of the fast. I really like that feeling. At first, I would kind of binge when breaking my fast which wasn't good. Now I really plan what I will eat to break my fast and try to have a good, healthy meal. It's really only missing two meals, so it's not that big of a deal. The best thing about it is learning what it feels like to be really hungry. I have been able to really control cravings since I started. I have water, unsweeetened tea or black coffee during the fast.

If it's for weight loss purposes rather than religious reasons, then look into Eat Stop Eat.. There are several posts on the message boards, if you're interested.

Basically, you never go a whole day without eating, but you do go 24 hours. Meaning, eat up until dinner one night, and then don't eat anything again until dinner the next night, and as long as you eat sensibly, you obtain a decent calorie deficit. Do it a couple days (not consecutive) a week, and those deficit calories add up. Mind you, I believe it's recommended to eat your maintenance amount calories on the non-fasting days.

I fast once a year in conjunction with World Vision's 30 Hour famine. So I usually spend the weekend with a bunch of hungry teenagers who are doing the same thing. I do drink water & small amounts of 100% juice during the fast at set intervals just to keep my blood sugar up and feel better.

I don`t fast. But this guy has pretty detailed plan to a fasting diet: http://www.leangains.com/2010/04/leangains-guide.html

It does involve eating large meals tho, so I'm not sure it would be suited for you. Regular small meals would be better in your case i think.

    thanks all.
I would not be doing it for church reasons, more of a time for my body to have a rest from trying to process food.
I guess in reality when I use to work 18 hour days I did fast alot b/c I simply just didnt have the time to eat at all and I was walking and moving stuff the whole time i was at work.
I dont have to worry about overeating since I had gastric bypass if I eat too much I just throw up so I know when Im full. There is no fun in throwing up for hours or feeling so sick to your stomach b/c you put too much in there.
I have read a lot on the Eat Stop Eat and it is something Im going to give a try ( doing dinner to dinner)

I did this earlier in the week and found it surprisingly effortless. Basically started my fast after I finished lunch and then broke it at 2pm the next day. I only drank water throughout my fast and felt pretty darned good. The one thing I noticed is that I got really sleepy right after I broke my fast and ended up napping for an hour or two on the couch. Definitely thinking of doing it again next week and might even make it a regular weekly occurrence.

Love this! My husband is a youth pastor and we were gonna do this with our youth last year, but for some reason didn't..... would have been powerful I'm sure!

when i fast is is due to medical reasons. I have to go about 30 or so hours with no food just clear liquids before I go into surgery. This happens every 3-5 years for me. I have a hard time with it since i tend to get fasting hypoglycemia ( however that is spelled) and then I get the shakes and a bad headach, I get real woozy and feel as if I am going to throw-up but all that comes out is water since that is just about all I can have. It is very hard and usually by the time I get out of surgery I am a bear and you better feed me before I bight someones head off and have it for dinner.

If you do not have the issues I have it can be very cleansing for your body and make you feel real good to realize that you have that kind of will power to controle what you are putting in your mouth and when you are putting it in there. If you do this I wish you the best of luck and will pray for you that you don't deal with the hard side of this. Have fun with it.

Check out the Lord's Table at http://www.settingcaptivesfree.com/. It's a Christan based eating plan. It worked great while I was able to stick with it.
