Hello everyone,

I'm Christine. I just joined yesterday, recommended by a friend. I've already realized that I go way over my daily sugar allowance which is only 24 grams according to this site. I do not add sugar to anything and the majority of the sugar is actually coming from the fruits and veggies I'm eating. I really love fresh fruit all by itself, no sugar no sweeteners, it's a great way for me to not want junk food and stay under my calories. But, I can't help but be extremely worried about this now that I'm seeing how much more sugar than I thought is in the "healthy" things that I'm eating and how I'm going over what is recommended.

So, does anyone have any tips on how to eat healthy things with little to no sugar (natural or added) in them? Or just any advice or tips in general would be greatly appreciated since I'm new and am still finding this a bit confusing and frustrating.

I absolutely hate counting numbers and having to stare at them all day and feel defeated in the end. I feel like I was making pretty good choices and at the end of the day this counter proved me wrong, and I just want to cry, but I know that's not going to help me any.

Thank you,
Christine

The counter doesn't understand added vs. natural. Don't sweat it if it's form fruits, whole grains, veggies. It's the added and the processed you want to think about :)

I don't worry about it. I avoid added sugar, and keep it pushing... just my $0.02.

if you are eating fruits and veggies with sugar that's not a problem. it's the refined sugar in processed foods and the sugar you add to your foods that you need to worry about. also if you go over on protein and fiber everyday don't worry about that either. i always try to go way over on those 2 things. protein is what the body needs to build and maintain muscle.

I think it's good to learn that fruit and some veggies do contain a lot of sugar...one hint I'd have is to try to go for fruit with less sugar like berries (strawberries have the most sugar, but still much less than other fruit, blackberries and raspberries are fairly low in sugar). Watermelon, peaches, blueberries, cantalope, apples, and nectarines are low/moderate in sugar. Bananas, cherries and grapes are pretty much all sugar.

Now that being said...don't focus on the numbers too much. THink about nutrient density--how much bang go you get for your calorie buck? A piece of fruit and a candy bar may have similar amts of sugars, but what are the calories, fiber, other nutrients? Fruit carries with it great nutrients--citrus has Vit C and fiber, for example--where refined sweets like candy will have no nutrients. Hang in there!!
