How does this website determine how many calories burned while exercising? I just did the elliptical for 45 mins and it says I burned 611 calories, but what is that based on? Unfortunately, my machine has no batteries so I just used it as is so I have no idea what speed I was going or anything. I'm just wondering how accurate those 611 calories are!

The entries on this site and any read outs by machines are just estimates, especially if they don't ask for your weight. Personally, I lowball everything by half if not using a HRM.

I run my weight and exercise minutes through this calculator: http://www.healthstatus.com/cgi-bin/calc/calculator.cgi

If you don't have an HRM already, I would stick with the machine numbers vs this site. I have yet to figure out what level / resistance this sight is based off of, but it could easily be different than what you are doing.

What if your HRM says you burned TWICE as much as the machines and MFP?

I put my weight and exercise in that calculator and it says I burned 800 calories for 45 minutes on the elliptical. That's more than MFP says, I wonder if that's accurate?

It very well could be. I would check your HRM against your manual reading for the same times. If they match up at resting levels, there's a pretty good chance they stay accurate at higher ones. :)

I have a bodybugg and find that my actual burn is lower than what my Elliptical machine and MFP say it is. My rule of thumb when I'm not sure on stuff is to go low on calories burned and high on calories consumed.

EVERYTHING is an estimate - even your HRM readings!

Its one of the reasons I dont stress too much about eating back all my exercise calories.
