How intense should your workouts be while you're dieting?

I have been on a constant struggle to lose 10-15 pounds for a few years now. I love being physically active and my most recent physical challenge was P90X. I have always been on the muscular side but my muscles are conveniently hiding under layers of squish and I find that when I am working out hard, I GAIN weight as opposed to lose it. I realize that I am probably putting on muscle and that's fine but my pants size is not changing and I don't look/feel thinner. It is really disappointing to be working out for an hour+ 6 days a week and gain weight. Id really just like to shed some weight and have the muscles I already have show through.
My question is, should I be concentrating on losing weight with calorie counting and moderate exercise as opposed to a really intense exercise program such as P90X or Insanity?

Great question- and I wish I had the answer because I'm struggling with starting into P90x now or sticking with my hard cardio + 20 minute weights routine. I've got about 15lbs to loose and I"m not sure which avenue to take either!! I'm interested to see the responses you get!0
