What weight kettle bell?

I've just ordered JM's shred it with weights and I'm wondering what size kettle bell I should get to start with? Funds arn't unlimmited so I don't want to have to replace it after just a week or two because I need a bigger weight, but on the other hand I want to be able to do the workout without having to heave the thing up off the floor. I do JM's 30 day shred with 5lb hand weights fairly easily if thats any help?

Kate - Most of the girls in my class use a 4 or a 6! It just depends what u feel most comfortable with - Not sure if thats ne help? x0

I got a 5 lb kettle bell and it was WAY too light. I would say 8 lbs is good.0

I started with a 10 lb bell, and now I'm on a 15 lb, but still use the 10 for a couple of moves. I am actually wanting to get a 20 lb here pretty soon. Because the kettlebell momentum comes from the hips and core, you'll be surprised at how heavy of a bell you can actually use. It's very different than dumbells.0

Yeah and it depends how long ur going to be going for as well as it seems ok to start but after 45-50 mins u wish it was lighter hehe x0

Wow thats quite a range of answers! Looks like I need to find a store that sells them so I can go and hold a few to see what would be good for me. Anyone know of any UK stores that sell them where I can go and try before I buy?0

If you have heavier weights use them first. I think 5 lbs. is not enough. I started with 8 lbs. weight, moved to 10 lbs. KB and now I'm on 20 lbs. KB. I use the 10 lbs. KB for turkish get ups-that one is hard for me with the 20lbs. I think if you get a KB , you should go with 15 lbs. and up. Good luck!

I'd recommend a weight that you can "grow into", especially if you want to save money. Depending on if you are doing mostly two arm "swings", you may want to buy a heavier kettlebell, say at least 15 lbs. I bought a 30 pounder and am working up to doing more than 20 swings. If you are doing single arm work, maybe consider 10 pounds so you can work up to more reps over time, without "outgrowing" the weight if it becomes too light. Good job looking into this!0

I wouldnt go lighter than 10 lbs. Not sure about stores in the UK, but if you post on the message boards on www.dragondoor.com someone will know. There are folks all over the world on those boards and many are expert instructors with kettlebells.0

I bought a set....10, 15, 20 pounds.
4-7 pound kbells would be pretty light.
I'm using the 10 pounder right now. It's a good work out.
And you're correct...as you get stronger, you increase the weights.
Some gals think 10 pounds is light...I'm not there yet.

From the conference I went to in January that was kettlebell focused, most women should start with an 18 pound kettlebell, strong women and most men can go up to a 35 pound kettlebell to start, and strong men should go with a 45 pound kettlebell to start. I don't know what exercises Jillian does in that workout with kettlebells, so I can't say for sure that those weights are appropriate for that workout. But that is what is recommended for RKC (Russian Kettlebell Certified instructors) workouts. Jillian isn't RKC so I can't say for sure she followed their form and safety guidelines to know that their weight recommendations would work for her workout. Personally, though, with my kettlebell workouts, I use a 20 and a 35 pounder.0

I do not use kettlebells I just use dumbbells but I started with a 40 pound one and am now at a 45 pound one a week later, you can do all the same stuff with dumbbells that you can with kettlebells but the grips and exercises for the kettlebells are more oriented towards using them. I would like to delve more into them but my gym does not have them so I just use the dumbbells and modified the kettlebell exercises for such.0

Our babysitter actually got me using a kettlebell. She's been doing it for years and said she would recommend 20lbs at first. At first, I thought....NO WAY but it's not as bad as what you think. She said if I got anything lighter than a 20lb, I would be jumping up to 20lbs within no time. I have had no problem with mine.0
